What we say...
Tech:
A wider, shallow head than previous MD designs lowers the centre of gravity to promote a higher ball flight which carries further. A black pvd finish and high performance Kuro Kage shaft means the STR20 looks similar to models twice its price.
Our verdict:
Fairway woods don’t come much shallower than the STR. With the head sat behind the ball at address the crown barely makes it above the equator of the golf ball. The head’s also particularly wide from face to back, so we’d go as far as saying if you can’t get shots airborne with this one you’re seriously struggling. With no carbon crown, speed pocket, cup face or weight adjustability the STR performed surprisingly well, posting numbers spot on our test averages.
Bottom line:
The STR represents decent value for money considering the inclusion of an excellent quality Mitsubishi Kuro Kage shaft. It certainly won’t let you down but with such limited loft options and MD less keen than many to custom fit, it makes the STR 20 difficult to heartily recommend.
