What we say...

Tech:

Benross’s first adjustable fairway wood features a compact, low-profile head and offers a low spin, penetrating ball flight through the same Thin Crown Technology in the HTX Compressor Type R driver. Adjustable from 13.5 to 16.5˚, it provides total flexbility for players looking to tailor their game to the conditions.

Our verdict:

The Type R’s head is a fraction smaller than the standard HTX from Benross, and experience tells us smaller usually means less forgiving. It’s great Benross have included an adjustable hosel but you have to realise the system’s not quite as sophisticated as some. It means when you lower or increase loft you’re also changing the clubs face angle too. Switching the hosel to 13.5deg from its usual 15deg means the face angle opens by 1.5deg and there’s not too many golfers who need a low lofted, open faced (slice inducing) fairway wood.

Bottom line:

As nice as the Type R looks it did have the tendency to impart lots of back spin which robbed shots of valuable yards. Distance isn’t everything but with the Type R throwing up data under our test average and because fiddling with the loft means you’re changing the face angle, we reckon more golfers would be better off with the standard Benross HTX, which is also cheaper.
