What we say...
The Tech:
Yonex’s Concentric Weighting System positions 2 x 2g weights and a 12g weight along the typical club path allowing golfers to tune spin and optimise launch for their own game. A carbon crown reduces mass above the centre of gravity while an adjustable hosel offers loft customisation.
Our verdict:
By breaking through the £350 ceiling for a driver the Tri-G comes up against what are perceived to be the very best drivers on the market. Carbon crowns have come into the spotlight thanks to the launch of TaylorMade’s M family but Yonex can actually lay claim to using similar tech since 1985! All testers thought the Yonex had a decent mix of a shallower face to promote extra launch, and a wide head for added forgiveness. We particularly liked having the heaviest 12g weight at the back of the head as it promoted higher launch and for two of our three testers gave their longest carry distances.
Bottom line:
Interestingly virtually all of the more expensive drivers tested have edged out their cheaper brothers for carry distance. Yonex were no different, with the Tri-G just getting its nose in front of the XPG and Z-Force drivers which we reckon says something about the extra quality components you get in a super premium driver.
