Wilson Staff Deep Red II Maxx Driver Review

The Deep Red II Maxx may not be the most powerful driver on the market – it came up a little short in both the pro and amateur testing – but it’s almost impossible not to like it.

“A very friendly club” was how one tester described it, which accurately imparts how easy it is to pick the Maxx up and immediately start hitting the fairways.

At 460cc, the Deep Red head is on the large side, but it’s so nicely proportioned that it never feels really over-big. It’s easy to aim, seems to encourage a smooth swing and knocks the ball down the middle with almost uncanny regularity.

All three testers thought the Maxx lacked oomph at impact – “there’s not a lot of pop to it,”  was how Spencer put it – but on the other hand it is clearly big on forgiveness: hit one out of the toe and it’s just as likely to feel solid and end up on the short stuff as a strike from the middle of the sweetspot.

So while the Deep Red II Maxx is unlikely to get you booming off those 300 yarders, canny golfers wanting to find the fairway more often might well discorev that it’s just what the doctor ordered for them.

Verdict: Appealing, easy-to-use driver that more than makes up for being a club shorter than the very best by being uncannily accurate. Wild hitters should investigate.
