What we say...
Tech:
The XJ1 is made from a new 9-1-1 titanium which is 10% lighter than traditional titanium, so more weight’s removed from inefficient areas of the chassis. 9-1-1 titanium’s extra strength means the body is thinner and more reactive especially at slower swing speeds. 30g of tungsten sole weighting increases stability and MOI, limiting twisting at impact and maintaining higher ball speeds.
Our verdict:
Tour Edge have never quite earnt the respect they deserve in the UK, even though they make some seriously hi-tech products in the USA, some of which find their way into tour players hands. 30g of sole weighting is a lot when you consider TaylorMade’s M2’s which is regarded as one of the most forgiving drivers available weighs in with only 25g. The XJ1’s got a deep face, a kevlar crown and just about the softest grip we’ve ever felt and it feels really lightweight and lively to pick up and swing. In the days before launch monitor testing it’s the just the sort of club golfers bought into. It feels fantastic, the tech story’s compelling yet you wouldn’t have been able to measure how far it was going. For all three testers the XJ1 was right in the middle of the pack.
Bottom line:
Two testers really liked the feel of the XJ1 and were expecting to see it back up its on paper credentials with some serious data numbers. We’d love to say the huge cost is money well spent and because you spend more it out-performs the competition, but for whatever reason we just didn’t quite see it.
