Titleist 915 driver Review

  • At a glance

  • TG Rating 4.5 out of 5
  • Owner Rating 4.6 out of 5
  • Pros

Two head shapes give this club an extremely broad appeal. Maintains excellent ball speed on off-centre hits. Easy to find your optimum flight with the two heads and hosel.

  • Cons

Quite a hard feel at impact. Some will find it more difficult to shape. Has an unusual sound.

Technology
Five years in development but instantly one of the best Titleist drivers, the Titleist 915 driver features a new technology behind the clubface called the Active Recoil Channel (ARC), which allows the face to flex more evenly at impact, reducing spin and increasing ball speeds across the face. The clubface itself is more forgiving thanks to a new design and material while a lighter, ultra-thin cast crown saves weight, which has been repositioned towards the edges to boost the moment of inertia (MOI). Titleist says internal testing has shown the D2 version is 15 yards longer in total and the D3 is 20 yards longer than their predecessors.

“ARC moves the centre of gravity slightly forwards compared to previous models,” Stephanie Bezilla, Director of Titleist metalwood development, told TG. “But we’ve been able to reallocate mass from the face insert change and internal pocket geometry, allowing us to put ARC in and maintain high overall MOI.”

The 915 retains two head designs – the D2 is 460cc with a full pear profile and more draw bias, while the D3 is the deep-faced, lower spinning 440cc head with less draw bias and a lower trajectory. Both also feature Titleist’s SureFit hosel, which allows for independent loft and lie adjustability. The moment of inertia has been increased over previous models thanks to internal weight pockets on the crown, which allow weight to be moved lower and further back in the head.

Looks
Maintains its traditional look at address, an all-black face and a shiny crown, but not to the extent that glare is an issue. Most will welcome the new alignment aid and how the 440cc D3 version appears less toe heavy. Even closer to perfection.

Feel/sound
It boasts quite a hard feel at impact, still plenty powerful enough, and with a high pitched sound. It’s not something we’ve seen before in a Titleist driver, but that’s not to say it’s unappealing.

Forgiveness
Without question, the club’s strongest attribute. Having used it for a while you really do feel like you can hit it anywhere on the face and you’ll still find the fairway, which boosts confidence.

Performance
We’ve waited a long time for the 913 replacement but now it’s finally here, it doesn’t disappoint. It’s longer and straighter than its predecessor and for most, that ticks all the requisite boxes. You could argue this comes at the cost of that pure-strike feel from the sweetspot and a few extra pounds, but when you’re longer down the fairway and on it more often, this pales into insignificance.

James Ridyard, Professional:
It barely curves off the heel or toe. It’s incredibly stable, shots really hold their start line, so dispersion is tight providing the face is relatively square at impact. It’s a classic Titleist design, simple with an improved alignment aid, that sits square. Ball speed loss was minimal on off-centre hits. The only thing I didn’t like was the sound – it’s loud and quite high-pitched.

Joel Tadman, Equipment Editor:
Club speed was rewarded with ball speed and distance. It feels firm off the face and very stable at impact, especially on mishits. It’s difficult to hit a bad shot with this. The sound doesn’t match the subtle, understated look of the head.

  • 5 out of 5 915 D2 Blue S+60 Shaft

    By Tezza

Was fitted to club by specialist, after trying many different clubs, the Titliest provided the most consistent shots, did not look too big at address and felt easy to hit. Swing speed 106mph, carry 250 were average numbers. In use The main difference is having a stiff shaft, replacing by Ping G10. Lower ball flight, very forgiving, misses now tend to be a slight push, the snap hook gone. Very nice club, very satisfied with product.

My ball speed went up despite a drop in club speed. Has a simple look at address, very traditional. It was easy to hit, aided by the draw bias of the D2 head.

The more upright lie angle of the A3 setting helped keep the face closed to path, which kept the spin down despite the added loft. I found it easy to use and enjoyed the classic Titleist look at address – very clean lines and a shiny black finish. It’s very forgiving on mishits and long from the middle, too.

  • 5 out of 5 Accuracy is its strength

    By GMAC

I have never hit a more accurate driver. Not only is it accurate but have increased my drives between 15 -20 yards. I play off of 15 hcp and use to hit 240 -250 yards and am now reaching 270 yards I even hit one 283yards way above my driving range. If you are thinking of buying one I recommend you get fitted by Titleist as they tried a number of shafts but the longest and most accurate was the new fitted Rouge shaft. *****.

  • 5 out of 5 More fairways hit

    By Ondaman

I've replaced 910d2 with 915d2 two weeks ago. 10.5 with Diamana shaft. The new club although not that much longer it certainly hits it straighter. I don't miss a lot of fairways anyway but this one is even better. I've missed one fairway so far in three rounds. No lie. Rest of my game not as good as my driving though. Must practice my irons more!
