What we say...
As the most expensive, highest-profile graphite-crowned driver, the ERC Fusion was always going to come under plenty of scrutiny this year. Even Callaway’s staff pros are divided between those who like the Fusion – including Annika Sorenstam and Charles Howell – and those who prefer the old-school Great Big Bertha II, such as Michael Campbell and Carlos Franco.
The two things that most analysts believe have hindered the Fusion are its price (over £350) and its small size (365cc – a lot smaller than most amateur golfers are currently used to). So, you’ve got to hand it to the likes of Hippo and Sky Golf who are able to produce graphite-crowned drivers that are bigger and cheaper.
Of the two drivers we tested here, the 440cc Sky Pulse Union edged it. Once we’d turned a blind eye to the yellow UST Proforce 65 shaft, we found it produced a series of long, straightish drives (slightly longer and straighter than the Hippo), with a more gratifying ‘tonk’ than you get from most composite drivers. There’s not a vast choice of lofts – actually you don’t get any choice of lofts – but £150 will secure you a business-like driver that’s no more expensive than it ought to be.
Verdict: Good value driver that’s closer to the big boys than its price suggests.
