What we say...

A little like the MacGregor, the Mizuno MP-001 was reviewed rather more favourably by our test panel than the bare distance stats would suggest. We particularly liked its classic looks, its well-balanced feel and its juicy, responsive sweetspot. Yardage obviously isn’t everything, because all three testers had the MP-001 in their top handful.

As with the Callaway and the Yonex, the MP-001 features a graphite composite crown, which is lighter than traditional titanium, allowing the designers to bring the centre of gravity low and deep within the club head for higher, less-spinning drives.

The FlightScope readings reveal that the rate of backspin produced by the MP-001 was indeed lower than most other clubs tested; with a littler more loft Spencer would almost certainly have hit longer drives. Interestingly, the two non pros, with an 11 degree model, found the Mizuno averaged as long as any tested.

Golfers who feel they need an alignment aid on the crown of their driver might not like the plain, deep blue finish of the MP-001, and the 300-yards-or-bust brigade might want a hotter face, but for the rest of us it’s one of the best all-round performers.

Verdict: Gorgeous looks, superb feel and the latest graphite-crown technology. Highly recommended.

The Mizuno MP-001 460cc Driver has a lightweight K shaped forged titanium body and graphite crown position the centre of gravity lower and deeper to optimise launch conditions.

This driver is probably going to work better for the better golfer.  The lack of a sight mark on the crown and the low ball flight are not going to help the novice.  A well finished head and good shaft mean that the club does look quality and with the model being a few years old you could pick one up for a bargain price.  Worth a look.
