Chris noted how the triangular head reminded him of the old TaylorMade Burner and the size of the crown meant it felt strong behind the ball. Kit said the white grooves on the face really helped with his alignment and that shots went well out of middle. Joel and James felt the bigger head meant the face was noticeably shallow. Balls weren’t coming off the face as hot as we’d hoped, but dispersion was fairly low.

Every year MD’s gear seems to get better and better, so when the boys over the Irish Sea gave us a call about their new range of Superstrong woods, we were eagerly anticipating the delivery of some samples.

We weren’t disappointed when they landed.

White may be all the rage, but MD’s flagship series of woods feature a stunning black head – put the driver down at address, and it’s hard to believe it’s a £99 club.

It features a slightly more triangular headshape than some others around these days, but I felt this helped to promote a solid takeaway.

The majority of modern-day drivers boast a high MOI, low and deep centre of gravity and a high, powerful launch – the ST3 driver is no different, and the sound off the face was very encouraging.

The woods feature a super colourful yellow Proforce 65 shaft which stands out a mile – it won’t be a hit with everyone, but I thought it looked great on what screams ‘premium product’.

We always bang on about the price of MD Golf gear but the fact is we reckon they could charge more for it and still sell the same amount. It’s that good! So if you’re on a budget, you’ll be in safe hands with their woods; superb, and won’t break the bank.

What more could you ask for in this expensive modern world?

First Impressions

Pros: Stunning matt black finish belies the price and with performance to match.
Cons: I liked the bright shaft and felt it gave a premium feel, but it might not appeal to all golfers.
