The vibrant look to the new model was a winner across the board. Not only did the colour range please our testers, the head shape also instilled confidence while the tackier grip brought about an extra sense of control. James struggled to keep the ball flight down and had to adjust his chosen Red driver down to 8.5˚, getting his dispersion down to just 9 yards in the process. Joel thought the face felt a little hard compared with other drivers he tried. Kit really enjoyed a higher flight than he was used to while Graeme didn’t feel there was enough forgiveness on off-centre hits.

COBRA’S AMP CELL rangle of drivers got us all excited, so instead of just one TG staffer having a go with them, we asked six TG readers to meet at glorious Woburn to see how the technology would fare in their hands.

Cobra has designed the drivers to have six different settings in each head and the feedback was hugely positive, with each player seeing noticeable improvements via Trackman when compared with their current driver.

Chris Newnham, off 13, loved the wide range of choice that the colour story gave golfers, but was even more impressed with the adjustability. “I want to look out of the window, and if it’s blowing a gale, change the loft to a lower one to combat the elements.”

Mike Manning, a 17-handicapper from Leighton Buzzard, hits a good ball with his current driver, but by reducing the loft on the AMP Cell driver, expert fitter Jamie noticed a stronger ball flight and less spin, especially on mis-hits. “I just felt it was easier to control than the driver I’m currently using,” said Mike.

Our lowest handicapper of the day was George Sadowski, off seven, who was looking for a few more yards than his current club offered from the tee. George loved the performance and gained nearly 10 yards on average when he switched into an A Flex in the AMP Cell driver.

Ian Whittle, off 12, also saw some improvements in terms of distance and felt the red driver contrasted well with the grass; he found it easier to follow the path of the clubhead on the takeaway, compared with his current black-headed model. Andrew Inchbald loved the orange option and was especially impressed by the size of the sweetspot while fellow 16-handicapper Bryan Slater was the last to test the driver, and also noted a performance improvement on off-centre hits – ideal for higher handicappers.

And while all of our boys waxed lyrical about the AMP Cell driver, it’s worth pointing out that they all used stock shafts – get properly fitted and we think this club will benefit a lot of golfers, especially as it’s so easy to adjust with the lofts clearly labelled.

Will the unusual colours appeal to everyone? Well, on this evidence, yes – three guys went for blue, two for red and one for orange.

First Impression

Pros: Great technology story coupled with stunning aesthetics and simplistic adjustability.

Cons: No black option might be a negative for some, although there is a less startling silver option.

COBRA's latest drivers feature the new breakthrough MyFly technology that will allow golfers to select from six different loft and trajectory settings in one club.

Furthermore, the AMP CELL drivers will be available in four fresh colours - silver, directoire blue, Barbados red and vibrant orange.

The new AMP CELL driver can be adjusted to the following lofts with a simple wrench; 8.5°, 9.5°, 9.5° Draw, 10.5°, 10.5° Draw and 11.5°. It means that golfers can now customise their club based on swing speed (higher lofts for slower swing speeds and lower lofts for faster swing speeds), weather (lower lofts to bring ball flight down on windy days) and course conditions (higher lofts for more carry).

The new clubs still utilise COBRA’s E9 Face Technology that improves distance and accuracy on miss-hits from heel to toe and above and below the centreline. But the new Cell technology and Advanced Material Placement enable a 12% larger elliptical E9 Face shape to deliver faster ball speeds and a higher MOI.

The COBRA AMP CELL comes in both right and left handed models with MyFly technology which allows any driver you purchase to be adjusted from 8.5° to 11.5° loft settings. It is available in Stiff, Regular and Lite flexes and features a Fujikura Fuel shaft (60g S and R, 55g L and 45.75” length) and has a 460cc head.
