Cleveland Classic XL Custom Review

  • Pros

The cleaner black look appeals; the deeper face inspires confidence.

  • Cons

Adjustability wasn’t as intuitive as some. Performance before changes in shaft and clubhead was down, so getting fitted for this club is key.

What we say...

2013 Drivers Test

The more subtle look to the clubhead compared with the previous model pleased our testers. The powerful ‘thwack’ appealed to Joel and Chris but was a little off-putting for Graeme and James. Solidness at impact was another theme across our testing team. Shutting the face and switching to a shaft with a softer tip helped reduce Chris’ distance and dispersion while a softer tip helped Kit get it airborne. The larger clubface increased forgiveness across the board; distance from centre strikes wasn’t as impressive as some.

All of the features and benefits of the Classic XL are ‘tuneable’ with this custom version. An adjustable hosel can be moved to 12 settings to change the face angle by up to 2.25˚; an interchangeable weight port allows any golfer to customise. It also has the largest and deepest face of any driver on the market, which creates faster ball speeds and a larger sweetspot. Three shaft options at no extra cost.
