What we say...
Callaway are replacing their extremely popular X2 Hot franchise with the new XR line. Headlining the new releases are the XR driver and fairway woods, which are designed to help you generate as much clubhead speed as possible.
The driver boasts a Speed Step Crown that reduces drag in the downswing and helps you build clubhead speed. Its design also frames the ball nicely at address.
Ball speeds are maximised through R-Moto Face Technology (see box below), while OptiFit adjustability allows you to choose between eight different loft and lie combinations to find the perfect launch conditions for
your ball flight.
The fairway wood is a completely new design with a forged Hyper Speed Face Cup that’s up to 36% thinner, much lighter and has a 16% larger sweetspot to increase ball speeds across the face for greater distance and forgiveness.
The head is shallower than the X2 Hot, helping move the CG 20% lower to create 200rpm less spin and more speed.
The shaft is key to maximising clubhead speed and both clubs come with the new Project X LZ, which produces maximum shaft load during the downswing for greater energy transfer at impact. Other shaft options are available for no extra cost.
The driver is available in 9°, 10.5°, 12° and 13.5°.
Price: £299

TG Tester Reviews:
James Ridyard, Professional:
A small clubhead with little to distract and a deep face. I was able to use more loft and keep the spin low; a good combination for distance. Off-centre hits weren’t the most forgiving, but it was superb from the middle. One of my longest on test.
Joel Tadman, Equipment Editor:
Alignment is tricky, but this is a quality golf club, it feels hot and offers plenty of workability. If you prioritise forgiveness, the standard XR model has it in abundance.

Finally I bit the bullet and decided to replace my trusty Ping G5 driver. I arranged an appointment with my local pro using the Flightscope analyser. This was by far the best driver I tried having gone through several head/shaft combinations. My old Ping is 10.5 degrees. I'm carrying the Callaway an extra 10 yards with a 12 degree head with less rpm. It is very forgiving right across the face. My Ping was straight but this is for me even straighter. I have it on a draw setting and hit a lovely soft draw with it. The numbers from the Flightscope confirmed what I felt and saw!

After a year of struggling with a yard sapping left to right tail on my drive I bit the bullet and brought this driver last week. Firstly the assistant at American golf was excellent and after an hour I left with my new driver. 1st round and it was like the clouds parted and a shaft of light descended on me. Sounds over the top but finally my drives were straight and even a slight draw on them. Ear to ear smile as I walked off my own course with a 74 and not breaking 80 for eight months. Then just been on a golf break on the west of Scotland and even on new courses the callaway preformed brilliantly. After 45 holes of golf on new tight courses I only lost on ball (and that was from a three wood shot) so the driver is already paying for itself. Go try it and see if it helps you as much as it has me,.

My swing speed increased by 1mph. This driver offers a firm feel at impact and above-average distance.

Quite low launching. The Speed Step crown seemed to help create a slight increase in club speed and also helped centre the ball on the face at set-up.
