2011 REVIEW

There was very little to choose between the top three drivers in the test, and Callaway’s new RAZR Hawk was right up there with the best. Like the Diablo Octane product, it’s made from Callaway’s newly engineers Forged Composite which is one-third the density of titanium (so it’s lighter) but it’s also stronger. The sole and crown of the driver feature 23 million carbon fibres that reinforce an impressive 67% of the clubhead. This means engineers could precisely control the thickness without any compromise, so the MOI is bigger and this in turn means more forgiveness.

Chris said he found it very hard to fault, as he rifled drive after drive straight down the target line, and there was a similar story for Jon who put it in his top three feeling drivers from the Test, even before he saw the Trackman figures.

It was one of the longest on Test too, thanks in part to the streamlined surface contours that the Razr Hawk boasts.

Bryan noted that this was his favourite in Test and was particularly impressed with the forgiveness and the feel, especially when the ball didn’t come out of the middle of the face.

So why didn’t it win? In a word, Darren. He liked the aesthetics and the feel, but he struggled with consistency – in fact, this was one of his worst in this department and it pulled down the overall placing for the Hawk.

Ultimately, this is a beast of a club and we reckon this is the best driver Callaway have produced for a while. Go and get yourself properly fitted and you won’t be disappointed by it.

The Callaway RAZR Hawk is a top performance driver. For Callaway, the big story is about a new material they’re calling Forged Composite. This is a very light material that features in the sole and crown of the clubhead and because it weighs so little, Callaway engineers have been able to position the weight in more beneficial places, giving you more forgiveness. The RAZR Hawk is also considerably more aerodynamic than the previous FT-9 model. In fact, drag has been reduced by 43%, meaning more clubhead speed and more distance.
