What we say...

Are you looking to cover all bases without breaking the bank? Then let me introduce you to Cleveland’s Package Golf Set.

Aimed at beginner golfers like me this 11-Piece package set is designed to work with you as you iron out your game and start building consistency.

I was drawn to this product as my previous Dunlop clubs have a similar oversized head and lightweight shaft both great for forgiveness in a beginner set. But my second-hand set are well past their prime and the sleek modern design of the Cleveland set was very refreshing to see.

In the double strap stand bag, you get a titanium driver 10.5°, #5 fairway, #5 hybrid, 6-SW, and a blade putter. This gave me as a novice plenty of choices out on the course to play all of the shots I need to hit.

When breaking the clubs in at the range my initial thoughts were very positive. The first thing I noticed was how good the woods sounded which offered great audible feedback when I hit the center of the face. The irons felt solid and the big thing I noticed was how much more consistent they were. The bag also made it super easy to get the clubs in and out of on the course and at the range.

The set itself

Cleveland CG Driver

Driver

The Driver, which has 10.5° degrees of loft, felt really good and allowed me to hit the ball higher and further than I have done previously. The graphite shaft felt flexible on my down swing allowing me to develop a good rhythm through my strike. It of course doesn’t have any movable weights or other features, but the low centre of gravity has helped me improve game on game.

Cleveland CG #5 Hybrid

Wood & Hybrid

I really enjoyed my time with the #5 wood and #5 hybrid I struggle with my long irons so these really helped my game as they’re designed to replace the lower irons in the set. Initially, I had difficulty integrating the Halo 5 wood and 5-hybrid into my game effectively, but after adjusting my swing path, I found them to be a more consistent way to improve on the course. I still occasionally lose balls with the 5-hybrid due to a tendency to slice, but when I hit it well, it’s the most rewarding club in my bag—it can make even a novice feel like a pro.

Cleveland CG Irons

Irons

Now, onto the core of the set—the irons, which range from 6 to 9. These irons feature a cavity back and perimeter weighting, making them extremely forgiving, especially for beginners. Paired with an oversized head, they allow you to consistently make solid contact with the ball throughout your game. However, the one drawback is the flexible True Temper shaft, which can feel slightly unstable when hitting harder shots, particularly off the tee.

Wedges

The pitching wedge and sand wedge are well-designed, providing a sense of purpose and confidence—ideal for recovery shots near the pin. The only notable gap in the set is the absence of a lob wedge. I’ve added a soft lob wedge to my bag, as I wish the kit included one to assist beginners with chipping onto the green. The pitching and sand wedges can feel difficult to half-hit when you’re close to the hole.

Putter

It seems like when Cleveland designed this set, the budget may have been exhausted before they got to the putter. The traditional blade style putter, lacking milling or alignment markers, doesn’t quite match the rest of the set, which is geared towards forgiveness. While putters are a personal preference, I believe a mallet or face-balanced option would have been the perfect finishing touch for this otherwise fantastic starter set. I find the blade difficult to get comfortable with and struggle to consistently achieve my desired distances. It’s safe to say my first upgrade will be the Putter.

Cleveland CG Stand Bag

Stand Bag

All the clubs come neatly stored in a sleek stand bag, which is a great option for beginners since you won’t need to spend extra money on buying or renting a cart for your rounds. The bag features double straps and feels comfortable to carry for all 18 holes. The club slots are spacious, making it easy to extract your clubs, though they could use more padding inside the bag to prevent the clubs from clashing together while walking. The pockets are well-designed, including a soft pocket for your phone and valuables. The only letdown is the tee holders, which are more about style than function and don’t serve much practical use as the tees fall straight out when walking.

Final Verdict

After 3 months of use, this package set has been a pleasure to play with during every round. Designed for forgiveness and enjoyment, the clubs perfectly match my skill level and offer plenty of room for growth as I improve my game. The standout pieces are the 5 hybrid, which is incredibly satisfying when you get that perfect strike, and the irons, which feel like a cheat code compared to anything I’ve used before. At just £699, the set offers excellent value compared to its competitors, though it could be even better with a more beginner-friendly putter.

Also consider

If the Cleveland CG package set doesn’t quite do it for you then it’s worth checking out some similar options on the market too. The MacGregor CG400 is a budget-friendly option, the quality of the set is not quite as good but will still do the job for a fraction of the price. If a similar high-quality alternative is what you’re after then the Stix Golf Perform package set is a good choice.
