What we say...
If you want a hassle-free start to golf or want a full bag without all the faff then this may be the set for you
If you’re after a brand you can trust to build quality golf gear time after time, Callaway is one of the best. So when looking for the best golf sets for your game, they will be high up on the list. The Warbird name has featured on some of Callaway’s most historic woods over the years and previously on an uber-forgiving set of irons and this set is no different.
Built for forgiveness the Warbird package set is ideal for anyone getting into the game and even mid-high handicappers looking for a complete set. The set is built to help golfers hone their skills and improve on the course. All this can be done for a somewhat friendly price tag considering the quality of the clubs you’ll be purchasing. The clubs will set you back just shy of £900 and for that, this 10-piece set comprises of a driver, 5-wood, 5-iron through-to sand wedge, and a putter.

Initial Thoughts
Having gamed a set of Callaway XR clubs for my time as a junior I’m very used to the look and style of these Warbird clubs and it’s a refreshing reminder of how good Callaway clubs look and feel. When I took the set out of the box I wasn’t surprised by what I saw the clubs looked very “Callaway” The designs are reminiscent of sets we’ve seen in years gone by. I was really happy to see the clean design of all the clubs through the bag, nothing was out of place.
The Callaway Warbird club set is ideal for both beginners and intermediates, you get 10 clubs which is a great starting point and at around £90 per club, this set is great value for money. This also gives plenty of room to add clubs further down the line as a golfer improves and enhances their skills. Over time you’ll learn what you need to add whether that is a couple wedges or a hybrid for the top of the bag.
The fact there is room to add clubs is definitely a positive but I also think this is where the bag falls down slightly. The way the set is made up I’d certainly have added a hybrid for the practicality at the top of the bag or a decent-bladed wedge at the lower end for a bit more versatility around the green.
Having said this, there is no doubt you get a lot of clubs for your money. Not only do you get a great selection of clubs you also get a set of quality headcovers and a great golf bag. The bag is a little on the heavy side but other than that it does everything you want, has plenty of storage, is built with quality materials, and keeps your clubs well organized.
I certainly think the design of the clubs in this set make them suitable for a range of abilities in the mid to high handicap range. The Odyssey White Hot #1 will do an outstanding job as the putter is quality and gives beginner golfers the feedback they need to get a grip of putting in the early stages of their golfing life. It’s also at a level where it’s worth keeping in the bag for years as you add more clubs.
The Set Itself
Driver
The driver looks and feels solid. There is nothing fancy about the club, no adjustment or carbon crown; it is a club that takes some of the thought out of it and lets you play. The shaft wasn’t the stiffest so for me it liked to flex under load. This did mean however launching the ball came with ease and I got plenty of height off the tee which for the target golfer is what you want.
The top line is really clean and the classic Callaway teardrop shape will suit many golfers eye behind the ball. I can see this club being a mainstay in the bag for a while with golfers in no rush to change. It is easy to hit, feels great, and looks great at address. It’s the exact type of driver you want to see in a set like this.
Fairway wood
One of my favorite clubs in the bag. As the set of irons ended at a #5 iron and there was no hybrid or utility club in the bag I found myself relying on this quite a lot. For myself, any shot over 200 yards I was pulling this out of the bag and it delivered time after time. Behind the ball, the low profile shape and matte crown looked superb. The oversized head offers plenty of forgiveness which is exactly what mid to high handicappers need from their fairway woods. The club also makes getting the ball in the air nice and simple which is great for the shots you’ll be wanting to play.
Irons
The irons look very similar to some well-known Callway names we got to know and love over the years XR, X Hot, and RAZR, the cavity back design is iconic, and at address is something plenty of golfers will know and love. The head shape is on the larger size and has a good amount of offset. The shape is something a better player won’t like but for a beginner is exactly what you want to see, a confidence-inspiring design.
You get seven clubs from 5-SW which gives plenty of variety throughout the bag to play plenty of different shots from a range of yardages. The irons are super easy to hit and feel great off of the face, whether you’re an intermediate or beginner golfer you shouldn’t have any issue getting the ball up in the air and getting some decent distance with these clubs.
Wedges
You get a PW and SW which feel great on full shots and will be great for beginners short game confidence. Sadly for me, around the green I was lacking any versatility with these clubs. I’d like to have seen a bladed wedge that would allow you to open the face-up and play a wider variety of golf shots.
Putter
Other than the shape of the putter, as the blade won’t be for everyone. The Odyssey White Hot #1 gets my vote and I think it will get the vote of many others! Superb quality and with Odyssey being a name you can rely on I don’t think there will be any need to change this club plus it feels unbelievable off the face.
Final Verdict
When buying a golf set for me it would come down to the quality of the set you’re buying and what you get for the money you’re spending. The Warbird package set certainly offers much of what a golfer would be after. A nice variety of clubs, well-built, uber forgiving, and easy to hit, all of which makes the set suitable for mid to high-handicap golfers. Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate I think this set would be a sound building block and offers you plenty of room to add clubs to your bag where you feel necessary.
Having said this, for the price you pay, I’d like to see a few more clubs in the bag maybe a hybrid or wedge option. I’d also like to have the choice of a stand bag too as if you’re like me I rarely use a cart or trolley through the season. But as far as sets go it ticks some if not all of the boxes the target golfer will want. There is quality throughout the bag, every club is easy to launch and easy to hit and they feel great.
Also consider
If you’re a fan of the Callaway Warbird package set but it isn’t quite to your taste then, many options are available on the market. The TaylorMade RBZ Speedlite set is a similarly priced set with superb quality and offers great club choice. Or if you’re after a more player-focused alternative then the Stix Golf Perform package set is a good choice.
