First Hit October 2013 – review by Equipment Editor Joel Tadman.
Technology
Some golfers will experience increased clubhead speed with a lighter head while others will get more out of a heavier head. It’s about finding what works best for you – for me it was the standard 7g weight. Remember you don’t get the loud “click” when screwing in the sole weights like you do with the hosel. Both the sole weight and hosel are dead easy to adjust, if not a bit time-consuming.
Performance
My ball speed was up to 161mph, comparable to other drivers launched over the last few months. The flight looked low and sure enough I was launching the ball at around 11.5º with spin also down at the 2300 mark on average. Adding loft via the hosel helped me launch the ball higher, but not as much as i’d have liked. Switching to the 3g and 11g sole weights reduced my ball speeds by around 2mph on average. My average carry was 274 yards, only a few yards short of my custom-fitted Ping Anser driver.
It definitely puts itself in the conversation for the best Wilson driver, and arguably the best drivers based on performance alone.
Looks
The light-grey matte finish on the crown is different. I don’t mind it, it certainly reduces glare from the sun and almost makes the head look smarter. The general look will suit lower handicappers. I say this because it sits open and the clubface is long from bottom to top and short, relatively speaking, from front to back. A high handicapper may want more meat behind the ball and a face that sits more closed to fight their slice.
Sound
Not good. A loud, high pitched “thwack” similar to the old Cobra drivers, but louder.
Feel
Even with the 7g sole weight the club does feel quite light. I was testing the lighter of the two shafts, the 50g Aldila RIP Phenom, which contributed to this. It felt stable, like the clubface was under control even when I gave it a little more speed through impact.

The Wilson M3 Driver is Wilson's first adjustable driver, where you can adjust the weight of the clubhead via three different sole weights, and the loft via the hosel.
