2012 LONG TERM REVIEW

I am an avid golfer, and committed to anything that will help get my handicap down so I was looking forward to seeing how well the trolley handles playing around 15 times a month. The results were impressive, and although there are more expensive units on the market this still delivered the goods every time.The lead acid battery has proved hugely reliable, and I’ve eked out 27 holes from it a few times.

The biggest problem I have found with it is the speed dial – it may be simple and easy to use, but it just doesn’t seem to be all that accurate so you end up with a setting that is either getting the trolley travelling too quickly or too slowly, and this can be frustrating. Aside from that, and taking into account the price, it’s very hard to knock the unit and for anyone looking for an entry-level product I’d certainly recommend it.

Pros: If you wanted a trolley that was easy to assemble and use, you’d be hard-pushed to find a better or more efficient one than the Freeway. The product feels very sturdy, well-built and reliable. I’d also say that it performed very well in wet conditions and on steep hills, and you never got the feeling it was going to die on you and leave you stranded. If I was on a tight budget, I’d seriously consider this.

Cons: It’s just a very basic trolley although it works brilliantly. To highlight one area of frustration would be the speed dial. To get this trolley to cruise at a walking pace seems at times to be a tough job. It’s very sensitive and I often find myself having to chase after the trolley to slow it down or make it go faster which is annoying.

Conclusion: A solid trolley from one of the Godfathers of the electric cart industry, but perhaps looking a touch dated next to some of the more allsinging, all-dancing rivals. In terms of reliability though, expect the Freeway to go on and on. It’s worth noting that PowaKaddy have recently launched their new Freeway Digital, which takes the original Freeway model on in our opinion.

2010 REVIEW

Powakaddy trolleys have always tended to be a little more expensive than their competitors, but what you get is the promise of excellent service and outstanding build quality. In this respect the Freeway is no exception.

It has been around for ages, has won countless awards and is still the most widely sold trolley on the market. So Powakaddy has seen no reason to reinvent the wheel with this version. The only update is a brake to help you keep the trolley under control on downhill descents.

We love the way the trolley locks together when folded down, making it easier to lift into the boot of your car, and once you have it set up it feels as solid as a rock.

You can also set the trolley to travel for either 15, 30 or 45 metres and then stop.

Throw in the array of excellent accessories that Powakaddy makes and it’s difficult to fault the whole package, even if it will set you back a few quid more than some.

What we like: It was easy to assemble and easy to use. It was straightforward to transport too and there was no danger of getting your hand caught in any fiddly catches.

What we don’t like: If this sounds like a huge criticism, it isn’t, but it’s worth pointing out that because the Freeway is an older model there are fewer functions compared to some of its more up-to-date rivals. Ultimately, there are more technically advanced products on sale, including the PowaKaddy SPORT, but if you want reliability above anything else this is a good offering.
