2012 LONG TERM REVIEW

I’m aware of the more expensive lithium batteries on the market, but I have to say that the lead acid one – albeit heavy – has powered the S1 Digital superbly well. It has plenty of punch after 18 holes, and for me reliability is a big thing. The unit is very straightforward to assemble and also to fold away, but that doesn’t mean it’s small – in fact, it’s quite difficult to fit in the boot of the car, because of the size.

If they could have made it with a smaller footprint, it would have been perfect. The easy-to-use speed dial is fantastic – speeds from 1-9, push the button and away you go – it really is a doddle to use. If you’ve got a car that can happily accommodate this beast, along with the (brilliant) accompanying bag, I would certainly endorse it especially given the excellent reliability factor.

2011 REVIEW

Pros: There was very little to dislike about this product, and having never owned an electric trolley before I can safely say I’m a convert. The product was simple to use and I never felt that I had to keep a hold of it to ensure it goes in a straight line – I could walk next to it safe in the knowledge it would stay close.

Cons: It might be because I’ve got big hands, but I found the handle a little on the short side when I did need to grab it. The other thing I found a little irritating was the size of the unit – it seemed a bit big and it was tricky to move and store in a boot of a car.

Conclusion: Like the S3 Digital, it may be a touch big but the performance was exceptional. Motocaddy have been offering topquality lower-priced trolleys for a good few years now, and this is the perfect example of how they continue to tick lots of boxes for lots of golfers, even for those on a tight-ish budget. There is now a new all-singing, all-dancing S1 Pro which is a higher spec and available from £349.99.

2010 REVIEW

What we like: Let’s start with ease of use – you simply don’t get a more straightforward product. Good, responsive speed dial, nice ergonomic handle and a tight bag grip. For less than £300 this is sensational and won’t be beaten for performance and value.

What we don’t like: Dave thought it wasn’t the easiest to assemble, whereas Jon found it very straightforward and actually thought this was one of its standout features. There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s limited in terms of functions – it’s been around a while now, so other brands and products have caught up a little.

2010 REVIEW – BRONZE AWARD

The original S1 model from Motocaddy was first launched back in 2006 and the Digital update has built on the success of that and the new S3 trolley – and what an update it is.

For not very much money, not only do you get a trolley that is incredibly efficient and quiet, you also get something that is simple to use and powerful too. Our quartet was incredibly impressed with the overall package.

Firstly, the curvy looks of the frame were easy on the eye and it looked contemporary without being over the top. In terms of assembly, it was very easy to set up. The S-Series folding system means the trolley clicks together when it’s folded down too which makes it remarkably easy to lug about. Ian loved everything about the S1 Digital, and promptly gave it full marks in each section.

Interestingly, our man from Philipstoun was happy to give it 5/5 in terms of value too, citing the undoubted class of the product behind his decision. Gadget-mad Dave admitted he would have liked a few more functions but for the money he agreed that it was a pretty impressive piece of kit.
