What we say...
We’ve all thought it as we have struggled to get waterproofs over our spikes. “Why can’t someone design regular trousers that offer protection in the rain?” Well, Ping says it has in its new Typhoon Chinos – “normal” trousers you can wear on or off the course guaranteed to keep you dry. Weather protection is taken care of by a quality chino twill that has been laminated to a waterproof film. A water-repellent finish is then added to bead water from the surface. The straight-leg fit of the stretch fabric, classic chino look and a soft lining ensure they’re comfortable.
The Typhoon waterproof chino trouser is guaranteed by PING to be waterproof for three years. It has been engineered to look, feel and fit like a high-quality chino but offers the performance of a waterproof pant. This ensures complete versatility for the golfer and provides an innovative alternative to carrying the traditional waterproof pant during the round, freeing up valuable space and weight in the golf bag.
Guaranteed waterproof protection is ensured with all seams sealed throughout. A stretch fabric and straight leg fit provide complete comfort and create the silhouette of a classic chino. The Typhoon also features a soft, stretchable lining, security side zip pockets and an internal self-sizer waistband, further increasing comfort during play.
Colours available: Ash or black. Sizes: Waist – 30-40 inch. Leg – 29, 31, 33 and 35 inches. www.ping.com

Extremely versatile and much smarter than your average pair of waterproofs! Quite baggy on the lower leg, but still very comfortable. They regulate temperature really well, which can be a big negative in some waterproofs. I think they combine the benefits of traditional waterproofs with smarter golf trousers really well. I also like that you can wear a belt with these. Some may want a tighter fitting on the lower leg.

Comfy and reassuring to have waterproof protection on trousers that feel so soft. The waist is very stretchy so you can wear extra layers if desired. The length is perfect as well, they sit nicely on my shoes and are not too short to let long grass wet my socks. I thought they were warm and very comfortable. The lining is soft and doesn’t feel like a typical waterproof. They’re breathable as well so I didn’t sweat too much. I liked the fact I didn’t have to worry about packing waterproofs on days I didn't have confidence it wouldn't rain, reducing weight. £130 is a lot of money for a pair of trousers, but in theory you’re getting two pairs of trousers in one.

Very good first impressions. They look well-made and I felt comfortable as soon as I put them on. The fit was generous. Whereas normally you may need your waterproofs to be roomier to allow for a pair of normal trousers underneath, the hybrid nature of these means that isn’t an issue. I can’t imagine warmth being an issue whilst wearing them. Protection from drizzle and wet grass was also positive. The most prominent factor is the comfort. Comfort is very important for me. Also, if you’re caught in an impromptu shower, you want to be certain the clothes will keep you dry – these will. You can wipe off the beads of water that form. Possibly not smart enough to wear as regular trousers and a few more colours would be nice.

Nice material, not too shiny like some waterproofs. I like the double back pocket and the belt loops, sometimes not available on waterproof trousers. The fit was a little tight at the front and the legs could have been more of a slimline fit. They were nice and warm, the material is thicker than most dedicated waterproof trousers so you don’t need another layer underneath. The best feature was the full and obviously good quality waterproofing. While I didn’t play in a monsoon, they were fully effective in the rain showers I encountered. They could have added a slit at the bottom of the trousers to let them sit better on my shoes. The button at the waist slows the fastening process somewhat.
