How to choose a golf boot
When winter hits, golf doesn’t stop for the dedicated player, and having the right gear is crucial to keep your performance up while staying comfortable. Winter golf boots are an essential part of that gear, providing the protection and support you need in cold, wet, and frosty conditions.
Choosing the right winter golf boots involves balancing waterproofing, traction, comfort, and durability. Whether you’re tackling frosty early morning rounds or wet afternoon conditions, the best boots will keep you warm, stable, and comfortable throughout your game. By considering these four factors—waterproofing and warmth, traction and stability, comfort and fit, and durability—you’ll be better equipped to make an informed decision that enhances your winter golf experience.
Spiked or spikeless
Spiked
Golf boots with spikes tend to give better grip/traction out on the golf course with them having soft spikes placed around the outsole. Spiked boots offer a more durable option as they have replaceable spikes, meaning if you look after and replace them there should be no reason they won’t last a long time.
With spikes on the outsole, the shoe has added pressure points on the foot which can result in a slightly less comfortable fit. Boots with spikes are a less versatile option as they aren’t designed to be worn both on and off the golf course.
Spikeless
Spikeless golf boots tend to feature small rubber molds on the outsole to aid grip, however, with technological advancements, companies are finding new ways to improve spikeless traction.
The use of compounds such as TPU when partnered with rubber molds, gives arguably as much traction as a spiked boot would. Spikeless boots are becoming more and more durable, and modern styling makes them more attractive as an everyday walking boot.
Traction and Stability
The soles of winter golf boots should be designed to grip slippery or uneven surfaces effectively, ensuring that you can maintain proper footing throughout your swing. Spiked boots often provide excellent traction, especially when they feature cleats or studs that are strategically positioned for maximum grip on frosty or wet fairways.
Finding a pair of boots that incorporate multi-directional tread patterns, rubber compounds that resist slipping, and replaceable spikes are vital when it comes to grip in cold and wet weather through the winter.
Stability is just as important as grip. Your boots should provide lateral support to keep your feet firmly in place as you pivot and swing, minimizing the risk of slips or falls. A sturdy midsole and a well-constructed heel can help deliver the necessary stability, ensuring that your balance and swing aren’t compromised, even on difficult surfaces.
Waterproofing and Warmth
Arguably the most important feature is a golf boots ability to keep your feet dry and warm in harsh conditions. Waterproofing is non-negotiable for winter golf, as courses often get wet from rain, frost, or even snow. Look for boots with high-quality waterproof materials like Gore-Tex or other reliable waterproof membranes. These materials are designed to keep moisture out while still allowing breathability, preventing your feet from becoming sweaty and uncomfortable during long rounds.
Golf boots should have thermal linings or insulated layers that trap heat without adding bulk or restricting movement. Pay attention to the insulation ratings and user reviews to determine how well the boots perform in truly cold weather. Some boots are designed for mild winter days, while others are built to withstand more extreme temperatures.
Ultimately, waterproofing and warmth will ensure your feet remain comfortable through all 18 holes, regardless of the winter weather conditions.
Correct fit
Another non-negotiable when it comes to golf boots, is picking out one that fits your feet correctly. This will help prevent blisters and stop your feet from moving around, which can limit your control during the swing. Having said this flexibility is key in golf boots. You’ll want footwear that allows for easy movement and doesn’t restrict your range of motion, particularly around the ankle, so you can pivot and shift your weight with ease.
When putting on a shoe for the first time always make sure there is no pinching or movement. When your foot slides in you always check your toes fit at the end of the shoe and have a walk around in them to make sure they feel comfortable. We’d even recommend making a few golf swing motions to ensure they are fit for purpose.
Adjustable lacing systems such as BOA can help you achieve the perfect fit, allowing you to customize the tightness around your foot and ankle based on your preference. Some boots also feature ergonomically shaped footbeds that provide arch support, further enhancing comfort during extended walks on the course.
Comfort
With your average round of golf being more than four hours, comfort is king when buying golf shoes. If your shoes are uncomfortable and hard-wearing on your feet, your mind will be distracted from playing good golf.
Try to find a shoe with good cushioning for the bottom of your foot and around the heel. Good heel and ankle support will keep your foot secure and will help with your golf swing.
You want to make sure that the shoe isn’t too soft as that may also hinder you in the long run as it won’t be as supportive. Look for a balance of support and comfort to make the most out of your new golf shoes.
Styling
Modern golf shoes come in many styles. It’s not all about the traditional look on the golf course anymore. A classic-looking shoe can now be seen next to the latest pair of sneakers on the tee box.
There are golf shoes out there for everyone, from brogues to lightweight, knitted models. You need to consider what shoes you wear and like wearing off the course and then you should have no trouble getting a style that suits you on the course.
We’d always recommend you thoroughly research all of the options and create a shortlist to try.
