What we say...

Strictly speaking, the r7 ‘adjustable’ driver is just a golf club. A very interesting golf club perhaps, but just a golf club nonetheless. TaylorMade, however, seem keen to turn it into a whole lifestyle concept. Bought the driver? Now get the cap, umbrella and, yes, stand bag. Purchasing an r7 merely to tonk the ball down the fairway, they seem to be saying, is akin to getting a Harley-Davidson just to get you to the station every morning.

Actually, if you don’t let all that worry you, the r7 stand bag is a pretty decent bit of kit, whether you own the driver or not. It’s a stand bag with a bit of a staff bag feel, all padded this and Velour lined with with that, with room for your waterproofs, spare sweaters and about 700 balls. It features no fewer than nine pockets – which, as any regular golfer knows, means spending 20 minutes after every round wondering where you put your car keys – plus an insulated bottle holder, while the well proportioned five-way top has full-length dividers to protect shafts.

Perhaps the best thing about the r7 stand bag, though, is its padding. From the four-point dual-strap to the back pad, everything is very generous upholstered, which genuinely makes a difference when you’re lugging around 14 clubs – TaylorMade or otherwise – for four hours.

Verdict: A superior stand bag that does justice to the driver it’s named after.
