What we say...

Technology
The new, lightweight SG255X is pre-loaded with over 99 per cent of Europe’s courses. It’s ready to use straight from the box, giving front, middle and back yardages as well as hazards. It will automatically detect the course you’re on and there are no annual fees or download charges. Features a sunlight-readable display, large easy-to-read distances and an electronic scorecard. 99% of European CP, ACR, AHA, electronic scorecard, waterproof, sun-readable display.

Tested
As reviewed in our 2014 Distance Devices Test: Kept pressing the wrong buttons and it became frustrating after a while. The styling is basic, but once you get it going, it’s perfectly usable. Having the hazard distances available with a click helped plot your way around. Perhaps lacks shelf appeal over other models. Accurate and comfortable to wear. You can enter your score and it works out your stableford score for you, a nice touch. Nice that the stroke indexes and battery meter are on the screen. It’s light, too, and the green trim looks stylish. It took longer than most to locate the course and is tricky to navigate at times as the button functions aren’t immediately obvious.

The watch does what is says on the box, also more functions than most.A review left by Amc says you can only charge from your USB on a computer this is wrong, just use a plug with a USB port built in!!Overall a very useful bit of kit.

  • 1 out of 5 Battery life of a gnat !

    By Amc

The first couple of times I used the shotsaver it just about had enough battery to last the 18 holes but since then it's run out of juice quicker each time. I dont play that often so even more disappointing that I now get about 9 holes if I'm lucky. It takes an age to recharge from the lap top (which is th eonly way to charge) especially as when the screensaver kicks in the charge is no longer taken. Very disappointing, not fit for purpose.

Fiddly, and takes longer to find courses than Garmin. Not sure about the accuracy either. Also, can't find a mains charger for it.....

  • 4 out of 5 Good but fiddly

    By Snooperman

Having used this GPS for several rounds know I think as a GPS it's good but it takes time to go through the necessary procedures to get the course, once you locate the course it is fine and has the added bonus of showing you the distance to hazards which most of the other GPS watches do not . Most of the people I play with have Garmin products but once set up I think the Snooper is superior. A big downside for me is how fiddly it is to recharge the battery you have to locate 4 pins and unless they are perfectly aligned it will not charge, in this day and age there must be easier methods. They say it will last up to 8 hours in GPS mode but after playing 18 holes mine has usually used 80% of it's charge so I think 8 hours is a vast over estimate. So overall the Garmin seems to locate the course quicker and is probably slightly easier to use but there are far more different modes on the Snooper and when playing other courses than your own it will give you more information.
