The Shotmiser G500 was the winner in our 2010 GPS test but for 2011 there’s no doubt it had much stiffer competition and there was divided opinion on the Shotmiser.

It was actually David’s favourite GPS on test because he felt the screen was sharper and more precise than the others. However, he agreed with the other testers that the graphics could be better and more realistic.

The other three testers preferred devices where yardages to hazards were displayed automatically and weren’t as keen on the touch screen function, commenting that you needed two hands to operate it.

Nevertheless, this is still a solid bit of kit with plenty of functionality at a decent price.

The G500 was arguably the first of the next generation GPS devices because it was the first to feature a touch screen where you could calculate distance to any specific point by tapping the screen. The hole also automatically zooms and rotates as you progress up the hole so what you see in front of you is represented on the screen. Another nice touch is that there is an optional road SatNav function, meaning it can get you to the golf course of choice as well as helping you round.
