Marriott St. Pierre Hotel & Country Club – Old Course

A chance to follow in the footsteps of Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman and Bernhard Langer who have all tasted European Tour success here. Water is a consistent theme over the closing stretch, climaxing in a card wrecking par-3 over a lake. It has blossomed since a new drainage system was installed while other changes resulted in new tees, bunkers and two new greens while a couple of holes were also re-shaped. However, a memorable round still climaxes with the nerve-jangling 200-yards plus par-3 over water. Parkland golf doesn’t come much better than this, which is why St Pierre has set the scene for many top tournaments including both Curtis and Solheim Cups. The Old Course is set in 400 acres of wonderful, rolling Welsh countryside and has benefited from a recent, extensive – and expensive – refurbishment. Mature trees flank most fairways so hitting the ball straight is imperative and, faced with a 200-yard par-3 finale over a lake, you’ve really got to keep your nerve at the death.

   Just come back from a weekend trip and played the Old Course twice. Great hotel if a little pricey in the bar. Really dissapointed with what was by all accounts a formerly good track. The tee boxes were uneven (some were unplayable and moved to front of fairway) and the greens were very poor - some were diseased and most uncut. One had weeds(!) growing in it and two holes had temp greens. Overall a real shame. Had a good weekend away but not due to the course. On the plus side, the last 4 holes were visually impressive and its a nice setting but just had the feel of a course thats been allowed to slide into disrepair.

  The 2008 redevelopment by Ross (2010 Course) Mcmurray has brought this sleeping giant back to its former glory. If you value a great layout, quality par 3's and mature tree lined fairways you'll love it. The quality of the new bunkering and the 4 new greens are a welcome update, but fortunately the epic final 4 holes remain virtually untouched - possibly the finist finishing stretch in the UK. Friendly staff and members and great value - We got on the course for £130 for 4 and will be back soon. Ask to play off the back pegs for a real challenge!

  A well recongised club throughout Wales.  But every time I play here it never seems to be in very good condition.  I have always played it free of charge and I think anything more than 20 quid would be overpriced.

  It’s a great track with an excellent finishing 235 yard par 3 over water, but is it worth the full price? I have been very lucky and managed to get a few rounds on the old course free of charge through work colleagues, but I was amazed when speaking to other golfers in the 19th after our round just how much they had paid. Ouch! Greens were in good nick but the tee’s & fairways need some work. For £75 plus it wouldn’t be my first choice.

  Echoes from 25 years ago that I should play St Pierre came back to me recently so a friend and I set off from Bristol with County Cards to give it a go. To be honest the course was in need of some TLC. Greens were a little untidy and the grass too long (supposedly 4mm. Rough was OK but the fairways needed mowing. Tees were dreadful. This is supposed to be a reasonably classy course but I can't say I would agree. I suppose if you're going to be playing a course owned by an hotel group you can only expect mediocre? Still, they know how to charge as we paid £36 per person after the 50% discount. It is not the first Marriott I've played and been a little disappointed. On a positive note, it makes one appreciate one's home (members) course!

  a very nice courses, the tees and green are top notch but the fairways a rough could do with some tidying up.be prepeared for a long day because of the OAP's and women on the coures.Plus £30 for a buggy quit pricey.
