What we say
With the Ryder Cup on the horizon in 2010, it’s all been happening at Celtic Manor Golf Club and on Wentwood Hills in particular. The golf course has undergone a serious revamp, including nine completely new holes. The pros are expected to get their first taste of the new golf course when it hosts the Wales Open in June, 2007.

Played Montgomerie & Roman Roadthe walk on monty was no where as bad as people make out.some long horriable walks to some tees and awkward cause we had powakaddy and had to hang on to them down some of the path.my friends had buggie and was a waste of time had to stick to paths so longwalks to there ball. greens were alot better on the roman but nicer looking holes on monty. save your money and walk the monty you will enjoy it more and take the course in

I played the Montgomerie course April 2009 and despite the drizzle and cold wind, had a great time. I can't think of one hole which isn't great, but there are 3 or 4 that surely match some of the best in the world. Number 3 was my favourite - a par 5 which starts uphill, then has a long drop down to the green which means a pure second shot can feed down to the green if you're lucky. When you reach the green, the views all open up and you have a stunning vantage point overlooking the 2010 course. The tees, greens, fairways etc are all excellent, and the facilities are amazing. I'm sure Roman Road is as good, but the Monty plays very hard in my opinion... the deep links-style bunkers can be brutal at best - they ruined 2 holes for me, and cost my playing partner a very respectable score on the last 2 holes. Like any course, I'd benefit from playing a few times... there are so many holes with blind drives over the crest of hills, and the course planner only helps a little bit. At £22 with 241 vouchers its a must play for anyone in the area, and its easily walkable unless you're very unfit (don't be stung on the £40 buggies as you have to stay on the track anyway... just carry a light pencil bag). I think they do a good deal for twilight golf all through the summer, so I'll be back when the sun comes out.... if it was this nice in the rain, I can only dream of what its like to play there in the evening sunshine.

Ok so we picked a cold time of the year but myself and 3 friends had such a wonderful day out and round of golf that we feel everybody should do one of the 3 courses.Im a new starter on 28 and found because we were not allowed buggies! the course very long and hard going .The tees and fairways were still in good condition and were all different to offer you every different shot around the course. My 3 low handicap friends loved it and when we got to the 18th we all could not get into the marble showers quick enough :) The driving range ,shops and breakfast options made us all feel welcome and warmed up ready to go and the lodge for food afterwards was just amazing with the fire and ok priced food and drink .We could see the 2010 course and think it looks good and in the summer with the sun on your back would be good.

Seven of us took advantage of the "2010 experience" and travelled down to The Celtic Manor resort over the weekend of Jan 31st. Friday we stopped at the local premier inn which was excellent then a short drive over the motorway junction for an 11am tee off on the 2010 course. The resort is amazing and the hospitality is first class. We were shown round the 2010 clubhouse which we were all impressed with given lockers with our names on and taken down to the first tee. The practise green for the 2010 was a bit wooley and we were concerned that the rest of the greens would be the same. We were warned beforehand that their was plenty of work being done on the course and that the greens had been spiked and the fairways scored. The layout of the course is amazing especially the tough back nine. As club golfers we found the course demanding and tough, obviously considering this was designed for professional and for matchplay we were left exhausted and a little disapointed. We were aware it was January and that there was plenty of work being undertaken I think the problem was that our expectations were too high and we were left disappointed. It felt like we should have enjoyed it more than we did due to the fact it was going to be the next Ryder Cup course. I'm sure it will be in tip top condition next year and we can't wait to watch it having played it I think that will be the true value to us, what I will say is treat this as it's marketed as the "2010 experience" We left our clubs at the Montgomerie clubhouse whilst we went for a night at the resort, the rooms were amazing and the hotel is spectacular, we ate at the Olive Tree which is a mediteranean buffet , we thought £30 a head was a little pricey but we were shattered and most of us had an early night. Next morning we played the Montgomerie, what a contrast, again a tough course but possibly one of the most interesting I've played in a while, tricky dog legs, elevated tees, decent greens, all in all an excellent course. We were very impressed. We were even more impressed that the staff had cleaned all seven sets of clubs for nothing, now that is hospitality !!! Brilliant. Overall if you take this deal see it for what it is the "2010 experience", we had an excellent weekend. I'd like to go back and play the Roman Road course but as for the 2010, with my handicap I'll leave that to pros !! Roll on 2010 !!
