Nefyn and District Golf Club

Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam – Nefyn and District Golf Club’s golf course record-holder with a 68 – loves this place. It’s probably got something to do with the views – the coastal cliffs on Anglesey to the north, the imposing mountains of Snowdonia to the east and, on a clear day, the Wicklow mountains in Ireland. It’s Wales’s most spectacular golfing setting bar none.

Nefyn and District Golf Club boasts clifftop golf at its best. The work of two thirds of the Great Triumvirate (where was Mr Vardon?), Nefyn’s 26 holes are arranged with 10 outward holes and a choice of two inward eights. The views are spectacular and the pub next to the 12th green is always a welcome sight.

Founded in 1907 as a nine-holer and extended five years later, JH Taylor and James Braid made some alterations in the 1930s that resulted in a third nine being added. A course laid out on thrilling terrain that juts out into the Irish Sea from the mainland. Expect some of the most exciting golf holes you will ever play, mixed with some of the most bewildering! Nevertheless, it is a ‘must play’ in Wales. Memorable holes abound but we especially like the 2nd on the Old, a 401-yard par 4 where you tee off from the cusp of the headland and never leave the cliff edge, following it round in a left-to-right dog-leg.

Nefyn and District Golf Club was formed in 1907 and converted from nine to 18 holes in 1912 while, after many minor transformations, a further nine holes were added in 1933. The Old Golf Course’s 5th hole has a spectacular tee jutting out over the sea. Make no mistake, it’s easy to get distracted by the stunning mountain and coastal vistas.

  I went here on my hols in wales, going down that big hill on the way to the golf course if fun! Beautiful view the old course is class

  this course is unreal, sea views from almost everwhere, yes it is remote but do make the effort to get there at least once but make sure you play the old course. when we played the greens were in a poor state and i have heard other reports since saying they were not good, hopefully this will soon be corrected as it is a real eye opener

  I played over a long weekend for a local wedding. It was late in the season, the greens were cored and the fairways were a little damp from a few days of heavy rain, but this was without doubt the best fun I've had on a golf course. With views up to Holyhead and across to Ireland on a clear day there is no better place to be than on the final 8 holes of the old course. With the ocean waiting for every faded tee shot and a stiff sea breeze to guide your ball OB it was the ultimate challenge of golf and shot making. If you can walk off a course having carded double your handicap, losing 4 balls and feeling wind chapped with a massive smile and maybe even a chuckle you know you've played somewhere special. Make sure you leave time in your day for a drink at the Ty Coch Inn. If you can't find it just follow your second shot on the 12th hole; it's probably sitting in a pint of Guiness.

  An excellent course which provides a firm test to any golfer - however you always get the feeling you can get a good score here ( although if the wind blows !!!!) The old 9 is a real mix of the unusual, however the constant interruption from people using the public footpaths which meander through the course are very anoying and ruined my enjoyment - but do not drive by - play it, its well wortha visit
