Top links and a severe examination when the wind is blowing. Conwy is the only Open Championship qualifying venue in Wales and needs to be treated with utmost respect, especially the closing three holes which are fraught with danger.

One of the best courses in North Wales, this classy historic links provides a stern examination, specially during the winter when the wind is blowing. It’s in excellent condition throughout the year, but be warned, the highly challenging final three holes have ruined many a good scorecard.

Links-wise it’s the pride of Wales along with Royal Porthcawl. This top links layout enjoys a breathtaking North Wales coastline location with several holes running around the estuary while the back nine is dramatically played out under the Conwy mountains. Make sure you pitch up with your A game – if not you’ll have to be content with the breathtaking views over the bay to Llandudno and Anglesey.

Back in 1875, a group of Royal Liverpool Golf Club members realised the potential of this land and initially arranged a 12-hole layout, leading to the formation of Conwy in 1890 and an 18-hole golf course by 1895. Since then Conwy (Caernarvonshire) Golf Club has hosted many championships, both professional and amateur, and the link with Royal Liverpool continued when it was selected as a Final qualifying venue for the 2006 Open which returned to Hoylake. Conwy became the first club in Wales to receive this honour.

  I played at Conwy the day before writing this review and the weather was good. We arrived and booked in with "The friendliest and warmest welcome in Wales"… It certainly wasn't! It was not rude but he could not have cared less who we were at all! However setting of on the 1st all was good until my drive found the rough… lost! A running theme for the day on the punishing course. However stick to the fairways and find the greens you should score low. Some stand out holes were the 2nd Hole a fabulous Par 3 with fantastic bunkering along with the other great short holes. The 7th too was spectacular from an elavated tee you drive along the dunes on the closest hole to the sea, the second is then played to a green sunken bowlshaped green. The back nine for me was the superior nine with 3 hitable Par 5's. The clubhouse is an excellent facility and has great views over the course from the upstairs bar. In all well worth a trip for a solid links.

  Great course although the greens were bobbly. Would recommend it as the layout is fantastic. Will be going back in the summer. If you get the chance to play this course play it......
