The Hirsel Golf Club

What we say
The Hirsel has been described as an Augusta lookalike and though that claim is a tad far-fetched it’s still very pretty!
The first and last course in Scotland, the home of golf, you could not wish for a friendlier or more picturesque introduction to the country or the game. The Hirsel was founded in 1948, which means it celebrated it's half century recently. Nestling on the beautiful and historic Scottish Borders on the outskirts of Coldstream, home of the Coldstream Guards, and forms part of the ancestral estate of Lord David Douglas-Home, 15th Earl, Chief of the Clan Home, and son of past Prime Minister, Sir Alec Douglas-Home.
Whether you are a passionate golfer or not, there is something for everyone in and around The Hirsel, which means you can enjoy your golf to the full in the knowledge that your family is pleasurably occupied doing their own thing. Go on have a look! A par 70 (72 for the ladies), 6111 yard delight, to play, and to the eye. Referred to in one golfing magazine as "The Augusta of the North", it is not the easiest of courses, but then it would not be as much fun if it was.

A short but tough course. good positional play will reward on every hole & using the driver needs to be chosen wisely.the first cut looks fairly standard but anything more than a 7 iron and you'll be playing your next shot from the same stuff. great welcome from members on the first tee, a few good tips like "the big lads go over the trees", we all went with 6-4 irons and it is a benefit. a few blind holes played cautiously the first round but as we played two rounds they became "easier" on the second. greens ran very true but a bit slower than i'd like. would i go back......without a doubt.

Played 2 rounds at the Hirsel on the 28th June 2015 and once again were not disappointed. I had played there before but the other three in the four hadn't and they loved it. The weather was good with only a slight shower and it was very warm wiyh occasional sunshine and a slight breeze. Corse was in fantastic condition as was the greens. These were running very and quickly and were in lush condition. We were made very welcome at the club house by the young lady at the bar. We got a supreb deal of golf in the morning soup and sandwiches for lunch golf in the afternoon with 2 buggies, followed by a 2 course dinner all for around £55.00 which we thought was great value, and all added up to make for an outstanding day. Well done to all at the Hirsel for producing such a beautful and picturesque course and for making our day a memorable one.

Your approach to blind shorts will determine what you think of the course as there are quite a few drives and approach shots where you cannot see your landing area. This is fine by me and I really enjoyed ths well maintained course with the kind of tree lined fariways that you normally only get at more expensive venues. It is not long with a number of par 4s at or just under 300 yards but it is a test of straight hitting. Quite a few climbs so get a buggy if your legs creak a bit. Very friendly clubhouse - everyone we encountered was extremely helpful.

A very tidy course and a good challenge

Excellently maintained tidy golf coarse, dont stray off the tee as you will more than likely find trees for your next shot, then the next shot. clubhouse very friendly
