Crail Golfing Society (Balcomie)

What we say
Crail Golfing Society’s Balcomie is one of the best courses that you can play for under £60 in Great Britain and Ireland.
The Balcomie boasts fabulous scenery from its clifftop fairways, centuries of history and offers something a little different from the pure links elsewhere in Fife.

It is just down the road from The Old Course at St Andrews, but Crail has plenty of fascinating history of its own. It’s home to the seventh oldest golf club in the world while Old Tom Morris re-worked the magical, if somewhat short and quirky Balcomie layout in the late 1800s.
RELATED: Why are some green fees so high?
The par-69 Balcomie is made up of six par 5s, six par 4s and six par 3s and while it may lack length it is no soft touch and needs to be treated with huge respect. With shots over rocky bays, lengthy par 3s and greens either perched on the cliffs or surrounded by gorse bushes, it’s a devilishly testing layout that’s full of surprises.

You’ll have to go a long way to beat the test and beauty of the final four-hole stretch up and down the dunes.
It is terrific fun and wouldn’t look out of place if it ranked even higher in our Golf World Top 100 Courses £60 and Under Ranking.

We played Balcomie on a nice sunny summerday, a bit windy, but nice. Great views, a phantastic clubhouse and a challenging golfcourse. Cheers

Good solid course

Golf course is in top condition with some of the best views on any course in the UK. Not long but plenty of trouble, when the wind blows the first 5 holes are some of the hardest around. Staff could be more friendly with the exception of the Pro.
