Belleisle Golf Course

What we say
The Home of Golf boasts some of the best municipal courses anywhere and Belleisle is a prime example: it’s a quality James Braid layout within Belleisle Estate on the outskirts of Ayr with spectacular Isle of Arran views. Watch out for the pesky Curtecan burn featuring on several holes. Star holes? The 385-yard 6th requires a demanding semi-blind tee shot and the 423-yard 13th demands two top shots to an uphill green.
More Top 2-FORE!-1 parkland courses
This James Braid layout, set down in 1927, is recognised as one of Britain's top public golf courses and has hosted the Scottish Seniors PGA Championship. A feature of the golf course is plateau greens, protected by sand. The golf course is relatively wide off the tee, and its higher holes give you great views of the sea. The golf course also sees regular Tartan Tour action.

Played this course in May 2009 on a blustery old day, and loved every moment. From the warm welcome from the shop to the Guiness in the bar, this was a lovely parkland experience for the 3 of us who played. Our handicaps ranged from 10 to 24 and each of us found the course challenging but enjoyable. It was in smashing condition, with good fairways and greens, well kept bunkers and well defined semi- rough (cut in nice wavy patterns like you see on the TV). There's plenty of space to use your driver, and you'll need it as there are plenty of par 4's that need a good drive and a long 2nd. Interesting mix of par 3's too. If your holidaying in Ayr and fancy a change from the usual fare of links courses, give this course a try. You won't be disappointed.

Great challenging course with superb sweeping dog-legs. Thought it was amazing value with the 2fore1 and hope to play it again soon. Some real tough par 4s which would test the best of us. Watch out for the thick rough which can really punish your score and your wallet!

Belleisle have employed a new green keeper who has turned this golf course on it's head. Putts used to be all straight without any borrow and slow. From day one the length of the grass halfed and immediately all greens developed subtle breaks, and dramatically increased in pace. Fairways have new definition and most of the bunkers have had a lot of work done to them. Roll on next year.

Stunning - and in ace nick... we loved it and it really summed at Scottish golf - raw, natural and beautiful

Really liked it. Was difficult for me as an newbie off 28 but would love to take it on again in a years time. Well kept and was standing up to the dry spell the UK was suffering at the time. But proved expensive, lost mobile phone some where and at least 8 balls....

Bellisle is a course I have played a number of times. The most recent visit was a disappointment. The Greens were not particularly good and the tees (yellow) left a lot to be desired. There was a general air of scruffiness about the place compared to previous visits ( I have played it 7 or 8 times in the last 10 years). Having said that Bellisle is intrinsically an excellent course that needs better TLC than it currently gets. The Pro shop is very good but unless you go for a drink in the old Tam O'Shanter bar there is nothing much in the way of facilities. We always go down to the Abbotsford Hotel a mile or so away which is very good and highly recommended.

Good value course (used 2-fore-1 on a Friday), but nothing special compared to its local colleagues. Facilities let it down somewhat, even if the welcome is traditionally warm Scottish, especially as we played in a downpour so would have welcomed a decent dressing room to change in afterwards.
