What we say
The front nine is parkland in style, with several water features while the back nine is linksy – including some high-riveted bunkers. The greens are USGA spec and are top drawer. An award-winning halfway house serves up top nosh.
The quality and condition of the course is exemplary and the layout interesting for golfers of all levels. Not long but always testing, it has been designed in two very distinct halves; the outward nine set in parkland with lakes and demanding dog-legs while coming home sand banks, high-rivetted bunkers and banks of broom dominate. This is a risk-and-reward course that everyone finds exciting.
Sand Martins opened in 1993. The golf course has been cleverly designed with two distinct and contrasting nine holes - the outward nine, set in parkland with lakes, water hazards and dog-legs and a stunning 'links style' inward nine with sand banks, broom and a host of challenges. Sand Martins is the perfect risk and reward golf course, offering a challenge to golfers of all levels.
Another plus point is the award-winning halfway house which is located between the ninth and tenth holes: it's the ideal place to stop for a welcome drink, a hot sandwich or savoury snack, all of which can be ordered from a telephone by the 9th tee.

We played after some very heavy rain the day before and the a couple of the first holes were water logged (still fully open though). The greens on the whole were very nice, ran true and are mostly huge. Never really got caught by the bunkering but the dunes can be a good bunker in the back nine. Interesting couple of openers with short fairways to greens at right angles. Accurate distance control required to get the best of those holes. short par 3 over water stands out for beauty, and a long par 5 to end. The style between front and back nine is easy to see, with huge "dunes" do style the links holes (very open though). Plenty of practice areas (driving/greens etc). We played it on a 2-fore-1 voucher for great value.

From start to finish the experience was excellent. The staff were welcoming and friendly, the green keepers (all over the course in the middle of the day) never got in the way. Course guide essential for the parkland front 9. I drove my ball long into water more than once. The contrasting links style back 9 was much more forgiving and scoring improved amongst all the players in my group. For the middle of October the whole course was in excellent condition (obviously have good drainage) and the greens ran true and fast even in a longer winter cut. Didn't have time to stay for a drink so can't comment on the bar. Fantastic day out, and good value using 2 for 1 vouchers.

After booking to play the course on a wednesday morning i was not told it was to busy just a small society going out. When we arrived we were told the society was running late so we waited as we were the next tee time. After about 30 mins wait we were called to tee off. It looked as if some juniors had been pushed in front of us which was only going to hold things up even more. After 2 hours and just five holes played we walked in as on each tee box there were 3 groups waiting to go. The pro shop were good and gave us a refund. As for the course the first five holes are nice and the rest looked good upon our exit

Great interesting course, front 9 are Parkland with a good variety of holes, then the back 9 have a good "links" style feel about them. Overall a great course where you can't just spray it off the tee's ! Good course management will ensure a good score. Very enjoyable day.
