What to expect: Some minor changes will be taking place this winter but the normal course will be in play with no temporary greens.
Play it: It’s just over three decades old and Tilgate Forest is famed for its narrow tree-lined fairways, tight dog-legs and well-guarded greens as it winds through majestic woodland containing pine, silver birch and oak trees as well as heather and gorse.

An 18-hole championship golf course and nine-hole Par 3 golf course set in the magnificent wooded countryside of the High Weald of Sussex adjoining Tilgate Park.

  This is a true woodland course with every hole being flanked by tall trees on each side, some of the fairways are quite narrow, so if you don't drive it straight i would leave the driver in the bag. it is not overly long, most of the par 4's are under 400 yards but with most of them having dog-legs placement is key. the green fee was very reasonable at £10 pounds. the only problem i had was with the state of the greens, they are very patchy and really could do with some maintenance. overall very good golf for the reasonable green fee.

  From a beginners perspective, I enjoyed playing at Tilgate. I did not use the 2 for 1 voucher scheme and furthermore believe it is a bit unfair to write off a course purely because of this and not look at the course itself. The course is a woodland course and the atmosphere is nice and serene, apart from when you err towards the east/southeastern edges where the course neighbours a railway line and the M23. Fairways and greens are of good quality and easy to play off. Loose shots more often than not end up in the surrounding trees which can make things trickier than an open course if you haven't been playing long like me. Bunkers were in pretty good conditon overall. Majority of the course was in good condition but I wouldn't go as far to say it was club standard. However, quite a few holes were under repair which wasn't an issue as the sites weren't in places easy to hit, but I did land in one and it did make life difficult on that shot. I didn't speak to the staff much as my group just turned up and paid, but didn't notice anything bad regarding attitude. Wouldn't say service was outstanding on the other hand though. Overall i'd say that the course is very good, and I would return as I found it challenging, however it could do with tidying up the rough/damaged parts. A word of warning. If you play into the evening, you WILL get eaten alive my midges. So make sure you take your longs and insect repellent!

  Phoned to confirm Tilgate take 2-Fore-1 vouchers (26/06/08). They don't. Played anyway because arrangements had been made. Won't play again out of principle. I don't expect to be realed in and then let down.

  At time of playing this website and the course guide brochure both showed that the course accepted 2 fore 1 vouchers on weekends. I confirmed this with the course twice over the phone. When i arrived at the course with three guests i was the told that they didnt. I was treated with utter disdain and was embarssed in front of very important clients of mine. I have sent a letter to the course about this but this has been ignored. Dont play here.
