What we say
This sloping course has downhill holes to start both nines and you won’t have a single flat hole to negotiate. Also, most holes are tree-lined so accuracy plays a major role. Finally, beware of the speed of the greens; they can be quicker on the hills than in the valleys.
Set in acres of Surrey countryside, Tyrrells Wood Golf Club, established in 1924, offers an 18 hole downland course, originally designed by James Braid, with alterations made by Harry Colt. The course is built on heavily undulating land, resulting in large changes in elevation. The course features fairways lined with mature trees, as well as numerous bunkers, resulting in a challenging game for golfers of all abilities.

Set in lovely countryside, wide wide ranging views on many holes. Large well laid out car park awaits you, and there was a warm welcome in the proshop. The rest of the building looks a bit daunting with unclear signage as to where everything was located. The first hole has a unique feature in that in view of the steepness of the down slope, you have to look into a large mirror to check when the fairway is clear before teeing off. Generally all the tees, fairways and greens are in good order, especially considering we went in November, the end of a season. The greenkeepers were also out and about doing some leaf removal from the sides of the fairways. This course is undoubtly the hilliest one that I have ever played on and thus made it a very tough challenge for a high handicapper, but since it was a fine day and not hot, overall we enjoyed the course. On the downside, the signage is very poor, with confusing tracks that can lead you to the wrong place for the next tee. Also there are no fairway 150yrd markers that are set above ground. They do have marker discs in the ground, but these can easily be missed, above ground markers do enable you to make a better judgement of the distance to the green. This course also kriss crosses a busy, fast, road several times during the round, extreme caution is required. Good after round cleaning facilities, with airlines etc. Nice to do this once, but it was too physically demanding for a return visit.
