Hoebridge Golf Centre, Hoebridge Course

What we say
Set in beautiful Surrey countryside on the outskirts of Woking, Hoebridge Golf Centre offers exceptional facilities at great value for money. The centre opened in 1982 and offers the choice of three golf courses, a relaxed and comfortable clubhouse, floodlit driving range, two practice areas, golf academy, well-stocked pro shop, a fitness club and private dining facilities. Designed by former Ryder Cup Captain John Jacobs and opened in 1982, the Hoebridge Golf Course is well laid out with plenty of interest. The Golf Course is a Par 72 and measures some 6536 yards from the white tees. The 5th hole requires a bit of thought – a dogleg par 4 with the second shot being played to a sloped green protected by tall fir trees. From the 5th green players can enjoy some of the most spectacular views over the scenic Surrey Downs.

This is one of the best pay and play courses that I've played in and around Surrey. The layout is great, has a good blend of long open holes, and moderately short but tight holes, and has always been in good nick when I've played. The long rough in the summer is the "don't bother looking" type, but given there isn't any water and limited bunkering, that's just the "defence" of the course for the wild swipe. The centre also has a great 18 hole par 3 course which is fantastic fun and good practice, and another 9 hole course if you don't have 4 hours for The Hoebridge. The range and practice faciliies are also really nice and good quality balls. The crowning jewel however is the Pirate Island Crazy Golf. All in all, a fantastic golf centre for everything you could possibly need.

I played the Hoebridge course at Hoebridge Golf Centre in September 2010. It was the worst experience I have ever had on a golf course in my 22 year golfing life. 95 per cent of the grass on every fairway is dead. As a result, the greenstaff have had to scarify and top dress all 18 fairways and implement a lift and place local rule. To add to the woes, the 5 percent of "fairway" turf that does have a grass covering has not been cut for several weeks. What that means is that when you attempt to place your ball on a decent lie, it promptly sinks down into the long grass! It is totally unplayable from the first to the last hole. And here's the rub; nobody told me of the problems on the course, not when I booked on the phone, nor when I turned up and stumped up the all ready eye watering full green fee of 25 pounds. The first we knew of it was when we walked onto the first "fairway.” In fact, there are no fairways, just one great bit field of rough. When we returned to the club house, I sought an audience with the general manager. He pointed out the laminated A4 sized sign in the pro shop which advised punters of the lift and place rule (but not a mention of the 18 fairways currently on life support.) Furthermore, it was one of no less than six different laminated signs in close proximity! So you are expetecd to read these six signs in the hope that you stumble across the one which barely hints at some malaise on the course. He also pointed out the other, identical sign on the members’ notice board. I told him I thought the information on the sign fell a long way short of full disclosure and that the customers should be told, to their faces, of the problems before they part with their cash. He said that he was satisfied that he had fulfilled his responsibility to the customer. I strongly disagreed. He offered no apology, no refund and not so much as a complimentary bucket of balls, by way of compensation. What they should be doing is telling you, before you pay, about the state of the course and then offering you a reduced green fee. Either that, or they should shut the course until they have regrown the dead fairways. As for the lay-out, well, all the yellow tees were so far forward we were virtually playing off the women's tees. So short was the course (in high summer) I hit sand wedge for my second shot into every par four but one! The 2nd hole is as dull and predictable a par 3 as I have ever played. The 5th is best described as "mickey mouse." It has this enourmous spruce tree right in front of the middle of the entrance to the green. If you can't hit a high wedge shot like Phil Mickelson, there is no way to clear the tree and hold the green. The 10th is a short, plodding par 4 which offers absolutely no challenge whatsoever. The 13th is also "mickey mouse" with three bunkers dug into the middle of the fairway. I can just about get my head around sticking one bunker in the middle of a fairway, but not 3. To add to the insult and the eyesore, one of them was flooded (it hadn't rained in the area for at least five days.) If they had any idea about maintaining a golf course, they would have simply marked the trap as GUR. But no. As for the climax to the course, the 18th is a horrible little 156 yard, flat par 3. No way to end any round of golf. And they don't even take 2 for 1 vouchers. The golf range is the only redeeming feature of this appalling excuse for a golf facility. If you are thinking of playing a pay and play course in the area, you are spoilt for choice. Sutton Green, Merrist Wood and Pine Ridge all offer superb settings with challenging, interesting lay-outs and at a decent price. Give Hoebridge Golf Centre as wide a berth as you possibly can. I certainly will be.

I managed to get a free round to play here and after 2 mths of good weather the course was very dry but that's not their fault. The greens and tees stood out as they obviously had been watered. Had the greens not been spiked on the day we played i would have given them 5/5 but 4/5 is fair as they were still in good condition. I did have trouble judging pace of greens but that's probably down to my game. It starts off a little bland between holes 1-4 but after that it's full of elevated tees, drives up and down hills. Holes that stood out for me are 5,6,7,8,10,11,13,16,17. That's not bad for a golf course. There are plenty of bunkers on fairways so you do have to think about your opening shot. I do wish on hole 13 that i used a rescue club. Facilities are superb as it has a 9 hole course and 18 hole par 3 course. A gym and well stocked pro-shop add to good golfing complex. Wish I lived closer to join it.

The best thing about Hoebridge is they have two other courses for beginners and intermediate players which is a good thing. The problem is though that the main Hoebridge course is a bit of a let down unless it is your first venture on to a proper golf course. It's just pretty dull with not enough memorable holes which would have you clammering to part with another green fee. The tees and greens are in fairly good condition but the fairways not so, but in their defence they see a lot of play. Hoebridge is very close to my home, but I often drive past on my way to an alternative which says it all really. The closing par three is a real let down as are at least half a dozen holes prior to that. Worst of all you will have a long round as the staff just let people tee off at will so queues on tees are very common. The facilities are good though with a good size driving range and decent club house and pro shop.
