Coombe Hill is steeped in history. Before it was a golf course, it was a haunt for highwaymen and indeed many villains met their maker on the scaffold built on Coombe Hill: business was in fact so brisk that it became known as Gallows Hill.
Not many golf clubs can boast of three of their Club professionals being Open champions but Coombe Hill can, starting from the club's first pro Sandy Herd who won the 1902 Open. Herd incidentally scored 13 holes-in-one at Coombe Hill.
Henry Cotton was club pro after World War Two by which time he'd won three Opens and Dick Burton, who won The Open in 1939, completed the hat-trick. Burton loved a gamble - he once bet a rival he could beat him using only a putter. Not surprisingly he lost his wager though not until the 18th hole!
