Wimbledon Common Golf Club

What we say
Located on the south side of Wimbledon Common in South West London – only 7 miles from Hyde Park Corner, the golf course is 18 holes, 5438 yds Par 68 (5190 yds from the Ladies Tees – Par 71) and is a true test of golf for all standards: whether you hit it long or not, a good shot will be rewarded.
Well-draining, the course is rarely closed for bad weather and The Soil & Turf Research Institute have commented that the greens are in superb condition.
The golf club always welcomes visitors, societies, and new members of all standards though all golfers need to don a red shirt (£2 for hire if you forget yours) which is part of Wimbledon Common history and tradition.

Members are the most friendly I have come across. Course is a tough test with mostly short narrow par 4's and long par 3's. If you go off line you will probably be looking at 3 off the tee. The greens are always in fantastic condition. Watch out for people, dogs and horses crossing the fairways as it laid out over common land.

I'm a member at WC and play the course at least once a week. It's a great little course to play, and the greens are fantastic. There are no bunkers and the fairways are not as good as you'd expect at a private club, but still very playable. Unfortunately, as the course is on Wimbledon Common, there are members of public walking all over the course. This can have a huge impact on the golf as the public have right of way... one week it took us 3hrs to play 10 holes! It's a real pain. The course is quite short on the whole, although there are 3 long (200+ yds) par 3's which require long, accurate shots. Keep the ball in play and you will score well. Find the rough and in most cases you'll be lucky to find your ball! Stand-out holes include the 4th (a good par 3 to a blind green), the 11th (a medium par 4 that requires a very good drive) and the 14th (a great par 4 - the best hole on the course). The facilities are very basic, although the South Africans running the kitchen serve up some excellent food at very good prices. Like many clubs, there is a stuffy attitude in the clubhouse towards younger members/guests which is a shame as there seems to be little socialising after play. They seem to be overly strict about dress-code in the bar too, which is unwelcoming. Overall, it's a good test of golf and an enjoyable course to play, with outstanding greens. However, if you're looking for that "full club experience" then WC doesn't come up to scratch.
