East Sussex National Golf Club – West Course

What we say
The conditioning of the golf course is superb, the setting is gorgeous with several holes meandering through woodland. The par 4 380 yards 18th is a great finish featuring an elevated tee and a tree-lined fairway. Overall, it’s a lovely golf course in a lovely setting but there’s a couple of dodgy par 3s including the 16th which is just 90 yards off the front tees.

The West Course used to be the members' golf course but now thankfully is open to all and sundry.
East Sussex National is also the home of the East Course, a 7,138-yard stadium layout, designed for tournament play - it's twice hosted the European Open which saw many of the world's leading players take part.
Accommodation: A new luxury on-site hotel offering 104 rooms, health club, swimming pool and spa, opened in May 2006.

Played it on Monday September 5th. Greens had just been spiked to a little hard to judge but I expect they matched the excellent greens on the East course. The course is wide with undulations and some huge greens. Good use of the existing oak trees etc. Great course to play and will test most golfers. The hotel is a little new and lacks character and there wasn't much going on when we were there so it felt rather large and empty. However the facilities are great, the locker room very well equipped, although if you are quite large you might want to take your own towel as they aren't the biggest ! Clubs were stored overnight and cleaned. Overall great value and two great courses. Definitely worth a visit. Downsides? They wanted £3 for 30 balls on the range which seemed a bit steep, and we did experience some slow play. Took us (a two ball) 4 hours 40 minutes despite the marshall saying that he had told the offending group to hurry up. Nice countryside though so we didn't mind - until it rained !

We played the west course last week, i had never really given the course much thought. We tried to get on to chart hills but couldn't get a tee time. WHAT A RESULT! we have played the london club, royal ashdown forest(how this is ranked above east sussex is beyond me) and quite a few other top courses. By far and away the best course i have played this summer and the best value golf i have ever had in the uk at £45 on a weekend. The greens were wonderful the fairways great and at last sand in the bunkers. pleasant staff, didnt have time to check out bar etc but will be going back again and again.

Not worth a visit, as you will be stuck behind a lot of golfers with poor etiquette (slow play and then vene slower play), and the course is not maintained to the standard it was years ago. Better courses in the area.

Excellent course, I prefer this one to the East course. Wide fairways and receptive greens. Halfway hut for a bacon butty and cup of tea is very civilised!

The course was in great condition, greens were superb, the new hotel is excellent and the food memorable. All in all a great venue.
