Bingley St Ives Golf Club

What we say
Bing St Ives Golf Club has one of the best courses that you can play for under £60 in Great Britain and Ireland. Golf World Top 100 editor Chris Bertram explains why.
Older readers may well have heard of Bingley, because it hosted a handful of Tour events in the days when the circuit went to classy, traditional courses rather than cash-rich resort venues.
Yorkshire businessman Lawrence Batley was the driving force behind the European Tour coming to Bingley in 1981 – and not just the European Tour but also, fairly incredibly, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer. Trevino claimed Batley was “the biggest golf nut in the world”.
RELATED: Why are some green fees so high?
Bingley held events in the following two years too, and its champions were Sandy Lyle (twice) and Nick Faldo, who had finished runner up in 1981.
All those big names will have enjoyed another example of Alister MacKenzie’s brilliance in Yorkshire. Bingley is three courses in one: it starts and ends as a parkland with some clever green complexes, then moves into some strong holes among mature woodland and also enjoys a wonderful moorland-heathland phase on the top of the course.
It is this phase that is the most memorable, incorporating strong holes that become seriously testing in the breeze that frequently blows across the moors. The more gentle parkland holes to end the course are a first-class finish.
Afterwards, enjoy a refreshment in Billy’s Bar, full of memorabilia from famous caddy Billy Foster, whose home club this is.
