What we say
Historic Whitby is the birthplace of great voyager James Cook as well as the home of a dramatic clifftop golf course. The coastal town and gateway to the North Yorkshire Moors is a popular holiday destination and provides holiday golfing heaven too – the course is fair though not overly challenging.
Indeed there are several short par-4s, including the 267-yards opener, which big hitters will be hopeful of taking advantage of. However, if the wind is blowing some of these holes will prove anything but short. Unfortunately the course’s breathtaking clifftop location means it has been seriously affected by coastal erosion in recent years – five new holes have had to be created since 1993.
But there’s still plenty of clifftop action before you cross the road and indulge in a spot of parkland golf before returning to the coastal side for the last two holes, the thrilling finale requiring launching a drive over Upgang Ravine (the 6th demands a similar effort going the opposite way).

Whitby Golf Club is situated on the western side of the town on the road to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend, and has a commanding position on the edge of the cliffs. There are wonderful views along the coast, north-westward over the picturesque bay of Sandsend to Kettleness, south-eastward over the harbour and inland over the rolling panorama of the North Yorks Moors.
It is the ideal type of holiday golf course - not too long or difficult for the moderate golfer - but with a reasonable degree of accuracy needed.

Splendid cliff top course then parkland over the road. Some tremendous tee locations near the cliffs with drives over ravines and cliff edges. Excellent use of the landscape and the greens are very undulating and run very true. A pleasure to play and good offers also if you ring. 3 for £30 on Mondays is exceptional value. Will definately play again.

Whitby offers a cliff top links course to begin with and then moves into parkland on the 2nd 9 holes. Plenty of variety in each hole. The outstanding holes are 6 and 18(100+ yard carry over a ravine from the mens tee on both. Greens are well paced and the members and staff offered a good welcome.
