What we say
This is an unsung hero of England’s ‘Golf Coast’. It’s a class links act and is steeped in history – 1892 and 1897 Open winner Harold Hilton is a former secretary of the club.
Founded in 1873, West Lancs is the oldest golf club in Lancashire and is among the 10 oldest clubs in England. The club was founded by members of the Royal Liverpool GG and some became members of both clubs. The club is twinned with Royal Montreal GC, Canada's oldest golf club and also founded in 1873. West Lancs’ most famous son is Harold Hilton, the greatest amateur player these shores has ever produced who also went on to win two Open Championships (1892 and 1897).

This is a lovely course which demands you pay attention for the whole round. It has it all from dune lined fairways, blind tee shots, huge pot bunkers, firm fast fairways(even in Feb),undulating well protected true greens etc, etc ... The course is a test for anyone which is why its an qualifying venue for the 2008 open at Birkdale. Hackers beware! i play off 13 and with the wind howling off the coast i struggled to a round of 95, and I played pretty solid. I drove, chipped and putted well, but land in the wrong spot, or hit a fairway bunker and your dead. That being said i learnt a hell of a lot from my first links outing. The course does not favour or punish either slicer or hooker yet it does demand good well struck shots, and course management of the highest calibre. My head was cabbaged after 18 holes and i swear I've never felt as exhausted coming off the last. That being said this is certainly one to experience if you want to play golf the way it was intended. Would I go back for more punishment though... ...too right I would!!!
