Bromborough Golf Club

It’s a fine mature parkland layout that was in good condition when we visited prior to The Open at Hoylake. The greens were superb.

The club has completed a £200k upgrade to its clubhouse facilities after securing funding from NatWest’s commercial banking team in Liverpool.

The revamp includes a new entrance to the clubhouse, an additional function room overlooking the course, improved dining space and a lift to provide visitors with disabled access and additional toilets on the first floor.

Located in a mature part of the Leverhulme Estate at the heart of the Wirral Peninsula, Bromborough is renowned as a hidden gem of a Golf Course; “Wirral’s Parkland Jewel”. For over 100 years golfers have been tackling the distinctive 18 holes that play between 6300 and 6600 yards depending on the tees used.  Its quality can be evidenced by its selection to host the English Amateur Matchplay Championship in 2005, English Men’s Seniors Championship 2003 and the Cheshire Matchplay in 2010.

We are very proud of our course and also our role in the development of Paul Waring, formerly English Amateur Matchplay Champion and currently making his name on the PGA European Tour.  Whether you aspire to his standard or just play golf for enjoyment, you should take the Bromborough challenge. 

Bromborough came into being in 1903 and is at the heart of the rural Wirral. But the peace and tranquillity was shattered in April 1955 when a RAF Bristol Beaufighter was forced to make an emergency landing on the golf course, while 14 years later the golf course lost four holes – and was temporarily shortened to a par 66 – following the construction of the M53 motorway.

   Played in early July and after the wettest June on record the course was in lovely condition. Emphasis is on "Total Driving" - you need to hit fairways as the rough is penal, but there are several strong par 4s where you need to hit driver to get on in two. The greens were the best I have played on this year.  The only sour point was the bar staff refused to make my Step Mother some toast. We'd had quite a long journey and all wanted a quick bite to eat but the kitchen staff were unable to do her some toast as they didn't do food before a certain time and our tee off time was before this. The Pro Shop staff were great though.  On the whole, a great day was had, in spite of the rain.

  I was invited to play with a member and paid £18. I found that I used most of my clubs as there were no 'drive and pitch' hole after hole. The holes varied in length with a good set of par 3's and some tough par 4's, some needing long irons or woods to reach in 2. The course is well established with plenty of mature trees. I look forward to playing there agian, if invited!
