Workington Golf Club

What we say

The greens are kept in very good condition, being some of the smoothest I’ve ever played on. The clubhouse has recently been refurbished and overall, Workington Golf Club offers excellent value for money. However, a few more fairway bunkers could be added while the course is relatively short compared with others in the area. Also, some holes are a bit repetitive.

Established in 1893 the club boasts a James Braid designed 18 hole course that is situated on the Western coastal fringe of the Lake District. Workington Golf Club is an undulating course punctuated by the deeply incised valley of a small beck. So, while there are not many “hanging lies”   there are some steep contours to be negotiated when the beck is crossed at holes 4,6,7,10,11 and 13. This makes for some challenging golf with the greens at the 7th and 13th being daunting targets.

Throughout the course the greens are well bunkered with exception to the 9th and 13th where the surrounding contours provide sufficient hazards themselves. Many of the greens feature treacherous swales and steps making putting a test in its self. This certainly makes the golf interesting and the player who carefully thinks through their approach is more likely to be rewarded.

Now a “centenary Club”, the course is well established with a mixture of mature Scots Pine, Birch, Willow and Hawthorn, all of which makes for a pleasant golfing environment. The woodland doubtless provide a haven when the westerlies blow over. Overlooking the Irish Sea and the Solway Firth, the sea breezes play a big part in the game here and will certainly add to the challenge of the course.

The beginning of 2009 saw a major 10-year renovation of Workington Golf Course complete.

The redesign is the work of world-renowned international golf course architects Swan Golf Designs. The alterations have undoubtedly enhanced the beauty of the course, and added a sprinkling of interesting challenges for our member and visitors.
