Mottram Hall Hotel Golf Club

This Dave Thomas-designed parkland layout recently underwent major on-course changes and as a result proved a worthy European Tour Seniors event venue last summer. It features contrasting nines, the wooded, undulating back nine providing most entertainment with the course ably backed-up by an on-site hotel, also recently significantly refurbished.

It’s ideal for a weekend break, but mention the par-4 17th to a member and they’ll go weak at the knees. It’s quite simply brutal – anything right off the tee will find water and anything short into the green can end up in a stream, a valley or one of two bunkers.

Mottram Hall is a golfing paradise! The facility boasts an 18 hole Championship, par 72 parkland/woodland course that opened in 1991. The layout was designed by former PGA Captain and Ryder Cup player Dave Thomas, the renowned architect of world famous layouts such as the Brabazon at The Belfry and Slaley Hall in Northumberland.

The golf course is well established and has matured fully since opening. The front nine is set in attractive parkland, whilst the back nine weaves its way through more demanding woodland, representing a challenge for all standards of golfer. Stretching to over 7,000 yards from the Championship tees, the golf course has staged a host of PGA professional events, and also the Kellogg’s Ladies British Masters in 2000 and 2001 – won by Solheim Cup stalwarts Trish Johnson and Paula Marti. The golf course is sand based and drains well. Therefore, you are virtually guaranteed golf even in the wettest of winter months.

The facility also incorporates a driving range, chipping area, two putting greens, and a fleet of 26 buggies complete with state of the art ‘Satellite Navigation’ technology. Plus, the recently refurbished Clubhouse provides the perfect location to relax either before, or following, your round.

  Two distinct 9 holes. If the front 9 was similar to the back 9 this course would be one of the best in the country. As with most modern courses it is quite long, which makes it a bit of a chore for the average golfer, especially the par 3's. However there are some great holes that will stick in the mind, especially the 15th and 17th. Greens played great. The only criticism was for the so called quality of the course the bunkers were poor.

   played 31st october in manchester alliance and was disopointed with the greens, looks like they started winter work a bit late. welcome was excellent and faclilties are very good, best leave till march to play.

  Although the morning was a bit wet, we still had great fun playing on this testing layout. Although there is only water on about 3 of the holes the course many tricky greens and well placed trees to negociate. I enjoyed both the front and back 9 for different reasons. I found the front 9 to be a good test of driving and the back 9 challenged every part of my game. The practise facilties were also very good and everything was in great condition. Defineatly a must play.

  A good value 2 day package but the condition of the course was not as others have reported, but it did rain heavily during our stay. Tees were all well forward and very muddy while the proper tees looked in fine condition. A lot of greens had been tined recently and didnt run well. The fairways were OK on the front 9 but some were waterlogged quite badly on the back, although there was some work going on to improve drainge, we were told. Probably a nice course after some dry weather, but not one for winter!! The front 9 a bit bland but the back 9 is the most interesting and challenging. The hotel itself was very good and overall made a reasonably enjoyale experience.

  We had great weather in the morning until the we started the back 9, but this is england after all. The Course, great condition, the people really friendly, one of the downs side's is the driving range need some TLC. The greens and fairways in good nic, the course can eat you up if your not at your game but saying that there are some holes are easy Birdies. I will be going back again.

  Despite torrential rain in the morning it cleared to leave us with a fine day. The course was not too wet, the greens were fairly firm although they were a bit patchy in places. The back 9 is visually superior to the front and all in all a nice venue.
