The Mere Golf Resort & Spa

What we say
It’s known as the ‘Wentworth of the North’ and with good reason. The Mere is a class Cheshire act – something you realise as soon as you drive through the grand arch leading into this premier resort. The course itself is a quality layout designed by James Braid and George Duncan in 1934 and finishes in style with twisting par-5. Incidentally you warm-up by hitting floating balls into the novel driving range, the mere (lake)!

I had a corporate day here. I spoke to a few members who were complaining before hand that all the money (subs are nearly £2k p.a) seems to get spent on the clubhouse/hotel to attract conferences whilst the course suffers. an open mind. As an experience, its a lovely place to be. Huge nice clubhouse, good food and facilities, and all set in footballers land with absolutely huge houses overlooking the central lake (which is used as a driving range). I arrived at the first tee with an open mind (easy par 5). In my opinion the course was in "good" condition, the greens were fast and true and well prepared. The bunkers were inconsistent and the fairways needed a cut on the day I played. The layout is good, it uses the available land well - no crossing fairways or tees close to greens. Some interesting holes, a bit of water but not long. I found it quite easy TBH shooting 39pts off a 4 - I wasn't hitting the ball well either. So the course is borderline good but there are better ones for the money. If you want a nice day, nice views, and perhaps to mingle with the gentry then go for it. I enjoyed myself because it was free, would I have thought the same if I paid £75.00? I am not sure.

It appeared to be a nice layout and in fair condition, its just a shame that the course is not fully open. after contacting the course and the automated serves stating 18 holes open and buggies were available, and then speaking to the club shop, who also confirmed that 18 holes were open and there were no temp tees or greens. as the round progressed it was frustrating to find out that 14 of the holes were on winter tees despite the fact it was the 1st of april and the tee boxes appeared to be in good condition, and large enough to render the winter boxes obsolete. The winter tees shortening the course considerably, the 4th hole a par 4 was reduced by 80 yards for the yellow tee markers. If i hadn't been misled by the staff i wouldn't have reserved a tee, and will not be returning.
