Ellesmere Port Golf Club

What we say
Ellesmere Port Golf Club is a fine example of a municipal, public pay-and-play course. It may well be as cheap as chips - it only costs a tenner to tee it up in midweek - but the golf course is well maintained and is usually in good all-round condition, specially as far as the greens are concerned. And don't think it's a stroll in the park - there's an assortment of timber, water and sand around to keep golfers of all abilities well and truly on their toes throughout.

Ellesmere Port is arguably one of the toughest, and well-kept courses in the area. Don't expect a warm welcome, don't expect to it be quiet and don't expect to see players in proper golf attire, but expect a test. Right from the first tee you are under pressure. The front 9 eases up after first 3 holes with back-to-back par 3's and a short par 4 (irons only off tee). The back 9 starts with 'The Port's' signature hole, a dog-leg par 4 over a valley with OOB all up right and a blind fairway. After you've cleared the valley the green is flanked by a pond to the left and woods to the right. The green itslef is among the toughest on the course with two distinct levels. The back 9 is alot tougher and you will struggle to find a tougher final 4 holes anywhere in the region. 15, long par 4 into woods, 16, SI1 with tee shot out of woods, dog-legging before green guarded by a pylon, 17, par 3 (200yds+ off whites) over stream and 18, short par 5 with trouble everywhere. All in all, a great test, for a MUNI.
