Wharton Park Golf Club is a high quality 18-hole golf course, set in attractive Worcestershire countryside.

The golf course is constructed to USPGA standards and comprises 4 par 3s, 10 par 4s and 4 par 5s. There are large trees, wide fairways and good-sized, well-established greens with strategically-placed bunkers on the landing areas.

Wharton Park Golf and Country Club in Bewdley has installed a high-tech defibrillator in its clubhouse after raising £1,200 for the machine as part of the club captain’s charity year.

The briefcase-sized box, which can be used to shock the heart back to life, has been supplied by the British Heart Foundation after captain Ralph Punsheon, the club and its members, held a variety of charity fundraising events including competitions and a fancy dress day.

Ralph said: “I’ve loved being club captain at Wharton Park this year but I also wanted to leave a positive mark on the club after a wonderful 12 months.

“We are delighted to have the new defibrillator. We hope we never have to use it but it’s an essential piece of equipment, easy to operate and could help save the life of someone in cardiac arrest.

“We have almost 30,000 rounds of golf played on the course each year and the furthest part of the course is over a mile from the clubhouse. We also see thousands of visitors to the club’s facilities. So whatever the situation in saving a life, every second counts and the defibrillator will have a massive role to play.”

As part of the club’s purchase, a variety of members and staff have also taken part in a training session led by the British Heart Foundation.

Wharton Park’s managing director Stacie Umbers, added: “The safety of our members and customers is always our highest priority. That’s why the defibrillator is such an important investment.

“It will not only help save a golfer’s life out on the course, but it is also there if it was required for a guest visiting us for a wedding, dining in the restaurant or staying in our accommodation.

“There are around 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests every year in the UK. That’s a frightening number and underlines why it’s crucial for us to have the new equipment.

“Everyone loved being part of the great events Ralph organised. He has been a superb ambassador for the club and the defibrillator is an amazing legacy to leave after his year as captain.” 

Ralph, 68, will end his captaincy in February 2015 but will continue to play an active role at the club. His chosen charity for the year has been the Bewdley Youth Café. He plans to present a cheque to them in March.

Designed around a 43-acre Royal Forest, the club’s 18-hole course hosts regular professional tournaments as well as society days, junior championships and competitions for members. Its £400,000 floodlit driving range opened last November as part of the club’s 20^th anniversary celebrations.

  Dont accept vouchers but very good value, long hitters course,expect a long walk some up and down holes,well worth playing

  Played here on a charity day. 5 1/2 hour round was ridiculously long. Lots of walking between green and tee. Buggy hire might be a good strategy in future although I usually carry. Inadequate signage lead us to tee up the 9th before we realised we should have been playing the 6th. Score card and course information boards contradicted each other on a few of the stroke indexes! Greens were in top condition as were fairways and bunkers. Not a long track at 6,400 or thereabouts. Par 3s very short. Too many 'blind' tee-shots and second shots into elevated greens. I generally like to see the base of the pin from 150 in. Changing rooms left a little to desire and remember to take a towel. In summary, I wouldn't drive more than an hour to play here given the number of other lovely courses in the vicinity.

  In great nick when I played it and a fair test. SOme holes are a bit bland but overall well worth a visit.
