Henley Golf and Country Club – Main Course

What we say
The build-up is impressive here at the Henley Golf and Country Club with the long and winding road leading to the golf course. However, first impressions can be misleading – Henley is no Wentworth and if you’re expecting something on an equally grand scale, you’ll be disappointed. However, on the positive side Henley is a relatively new, maturing golf course which can be enjoyed by low handicappers and hackers alike. Okay, it’s newness is clearly apparent and there’s nothing dynamic about the layout though, to be fair it, was in excellent overall shape. The golf course is probably overshadowed in more ways than one by its superb modern clubhouse complete with balcony.
The Henley Golf and Country Club Golf Course opened in 1994 and is maturing well. It is constantly being developed and improved upon.

Tried this as a 2 for 1, as at £40 for a weekend round it seems pricey, unless you get a discount. The positives are the general condition of the course - signage by the tees for example, and the greens, which are superb. The course is very long, and tiring if you usually play somewhere under 6000 yards. They've tried their best to create varied holes, but too many seem very 'samey' - every fairway seemingly flanked by wispy rough and the same height of trees. Lots of tee or approach shots are played uphill with no view of the green, which makes it even more difficult the first time you play there. Overall though a decent course with excellent greens - just make sure your driver is in good form.

First played this course in 1997, not long after it had opened. Back then it was open, bland, in dubious condition and boring. Having read the reviews below, i was happy to give it the benefit of doubt.... First off, the green fees are disgraceful. We paid (thanks to a problem with 2-Fore-1 voucher) £40 each for 18 holes and to be honest this can only be based on the assumption that everyone is using 241 vouchers as even at £20 it is debatable as to whether that is reasonable or not. The course itself still felt very 'new' and whilst the greens were reasonable (if a little slow), the fairways and tees were poor. The tees were far from flat and the fairways (which were patchy and had barely been mowed), offered no definition from the tee. In fact, it 'felt' just like it did over a decade ago. There were no memorable holes. If i had to pick one it would be the 18th but nothing else stood out and made me think about going back in the future. In fact, the course felt very long (even though it did not play long). The clubhouse and facilities are fairly pleasant and it's nice to see a grass range. I suspect that the nice clubhouse is based more on the corporate and wedding clientele rather than the golfers. They must use this model as an excuse to be able to charge nearly £3 for a pint of coke, a crime fitting of a prison sentence. Overall, i would say that if you were thinking of going, make sure you have some vouchers, do NOT pay the full price green fee and pretend that the bar is actually an oasis in the middle of the Kalahari.... We left feeling somewhat fleeced, tired and very disappointed.

Played here 3 or 4 years ago and thought it OK. Played today & it was like a different course - more interesting water features, well drained and quite challenging. The high point without doubt the greens - I would say some of the best I've played this year. Good bar food as well. Well worth a visit

It's challenging and can be a long course, specially if the wind is blowing - it's relatively open. It's improved a lot over the years though it still needs to mature.

For the time of year, it was in good condition. The fairways and greens both looked really nice and to be honest it was great to play. The owners have done a lot of work on the course and it's paid off.

The course was generally in good condition, not bad at all. I've played here a lot over the past eight years and it's changed a helluva lot. In fact it's 100% better than it was.

A nice course, but as of July 2006 in poor condition - fairways devoid of grass due to no fairway irrigation. Tees are flat and greens are good and true. A good layout where you do not feel overlooked and there is enough to offer all golfers interest. Holes 12-16 are a bit plain but the rest of the course offers interest. Nice clubhouse and easy access from motorway (without any m/way noise).

It's an improving course and the trees they planted 12 or 13 years ago are starting to become a nuisance now! I wouldn't say there's any outstanding or memorable holes though they're all pretty good.
