Greenway Hall Golf Club

What we say

A quick look at the scorecard and you’ll be somewhat confused – the opening hole is 226 yards and is a par-4 while the 18th is 250 yards but a par-3!

This is a result of hilly Greenway’s serious slopes which you have to negotiate on this picturesque track – flat lies are fairly rare as you have to deal with hitting shots with the ball below and above your feet to greens either elevated or sitting in a valley.

The hills also create other problems, especially on windy days, when even a slightly inaccurate can run into trouble.

Greenway Hall Golf Course - golf how it used to be played. A traditional Moorland Course built back in 1909 with spectacular views of the distant Peak District.

Sculpted through Ancient Woodland you have to be accurate, particularly off the tee or it's a chip out sideways. Greenway Hall boasts some of the most challenging and picturesque par 3s in the county. If it's a day to get away from it all then Greenway is your choice.

Voted the best golf club in Staffordshire 2002 by the Staffordshire Journal for its 'quality of greens, condition and service' it has got to be worth a visit.

  • 4 out of 5 A Staffordshire Gem!!

    By Paul Gerrard

I visited Greenway Hall golf club with my father in law, taking advantage of a offer that gave us 2 rounds, plus a meal, plus a pint for £10 each. Value for money without doubt. A warm welcome greets you at the course set in the North Staffordshire countryside with friendly staff all round. So where do we start at the 1st, must be an elevation of 30m tee to green and the theme of playing on a hillside continues throughout. The first 2 holes are subject to cross over with the 16th, 17th and 18th so you need to have your wits about you. The 4th a 90 degree dog leg on which you land it on a 45 degree bank not long but really challenging. The views from the 9th thro the 12th are to die for with a view on the Peak District. a well looked after course with manicured fairways and greens, the first cut allows you escape the rough is.....rough so stay out. Work is continuing on the course to reduce the cross overs, proposals to move the 1st tee and the 16th green are underway with permission for a driving range too. although short in length if you want to test your prowess on your par 3's this is the place to go. The 18th provides a 244m par 3 in front of the club house shooting between the trees - good luck and enjoy. I will be going back!! • 4 out of 5 Two months on

    By Dave Street

Seems like I'm the only one who wants to extol the virtues of this course. Played it today and cannot believe the improvement in the past TWO months. The greens are as good as any I have played this year. Cart tracks abound. Bridges now span the ditches, not just planks of wood. Tees are a flat area to play from; now there's a novelty. The whole course has had a major overall and is well worth the asking visitor price of £17.00. If you are in the area, do not miss the chance to play this beauty of a course. The clubhouse is very welcoming, a pro who actually smiles greets you. Buggies, if the hills look a little tough are there to be had. Cannot get better value for money in the area, and yes I've played them all.

  • 3.5 out of 5 Greenway on the move

    By Dave Street

Greenway has always been thought of as a second rate course in the area as the course was a little uninspiring and the greens and tees were poor. Attempts were made in the past few years to improve and had limited impact but with the latest change of management, that all seems to change. The problem of the 2nd,17th and 16th crossing over each other will be resolved as there are plans for a new 1st hole, which is a pity as the 1st is an interesting short par four to an elevated green. Big hitters can drive it but mortals have to position there drive to give a good approach to the green. The 5th was never my favourite as you drove over a bank of trees, so was never sure where your tee shot was going. The trees are being thinned and a pond/lake being put in. Mounds now abound giving form on the course. The 14th is a problem hole as it seems easier to put your tee shot in the 15th bunker than to find the fairway, which slopes left to right. The 18th gives a wonderful shot down to the green beside the clubhouse. Wonderful views from the course accross the moorlands. A challenge to all levels, short with 6 par threes but recommended, especially if you have not played it for a few years. Greenway is on the move
