Rothley Park Golf Club

What we say
Rothley Park celebrating it’s centenary in 2011 lies on the edge of the Charnwood Forest. A parkland layout with many mature trees, the course offers easy walking but a superb test of golf. Completely isolated from any roads, it offers a real escape to the country. The only external distraction is the Great Central railway that runs parallel to the 15th hole! At 6,500 yards the par 71 layout has a tremendous diversity of holes to test all facets of a golfer’s ability. The comfortable Club house awaits you upon your return, where good food, good company and great stories can be enjoyed.

We played Rothley Park as a 2 ball in mid November 2008. I have to say that this is probably one of the best courses I have played this year. On arrival we checked in at the pro shop where we were welcomed by the very polite pro who gave us all the info we needed to enjoy our day. Out on the course we were very pleasantly surprised at how well the fairways and grees had held up against the winter we have had. The fairways, bunkers, tees and greens were all in great condition and not wet at all. There are a very good variation in holes from long par 4s at about 450 yards to a par 4 at 260 that encourages you to have a go in 1. (Not that I made it in 1), some good changes in elevation on some holes are a joy to play. Watch out for what the club calls their amen corner from hole 13 to 16, the course certainly bears its teeth here particularly if played into the wind as it did with us. Overall a really good day out and good value at £22 each with a 241.Food in the clubhouse was also very good and also good value. Only bad point to report were the old boys that I know all private courses have but they do not have to talk down to you as they did with us. That aside a great day out.

With easy links 7 miles north of Leicester, just off the A6 in the affluent village of Rothley, the course is easily findable. On first arrival I felt really welcomed by the friendly members and pro shop staff here and found their advice invaluble. Facilities here include a practice ground with greens, practice nets, a putting green, a fully stocked pro shop with trolley hire, a bar/restaurant and an excellent changing room/shower facility. As the club is coming up for its centenary year it was no surprise to me that this beautifully established ‘gem’ of a course would provide a challenge in an attractive parkland setting, playing a par 71, 6500 yards from the back tees. All 18 holes meander 'on and on' here as opposed to 'up and down', in a secluded way, framed by mature indigenous trees and a lot of natural wildlife. The tees, greens and the rest of the course are in excellent condition, after the appointment of their new green keeper. The greens I must say are fast and true with some very challenging pin placements. Adjacent to the course is Britain's only mainline steam railway and what a pleasure it is when one of the locomotives comes chuffing past you down the 15th fairway. After our round, we dined in the fully modernised traditional style clubhouse which offered superb cuisine from the clubs new chef in a relaxing, comfortable atmosphere. Overall, a wonderful club which observes and encourages the traditions and etiquette of golf on the course and in the clubhouse. One shall be returning very soon. A jewel tucked away in the heart of the east midlands!
