What we say
Ross-on-Wye Golf Club was formed in 1903 and for 22 years used a golf course at Alton Court before switching to Rudhall where J.H. Taylor designed a nine-hole golf course. However, eventually th e members wanted an 18 hole golf course and they eventually got their wish when the club purchased land at Jays Green.
The first nine greens and tees were seeded in the Autumn of 1962 and the sowing of the first nine fairways took place in August 1963. That year also saw the marking out of the fairways for the second nine holes, and the cleaving of the trees.
The golf course, which was officially opened by Mr J. J. E. Pennick, President of the English Golf Union on May 7th, 1967, has a length of 6,451 yards, with a premium on accuracy due to the attractive but testing, tree-lined fairways.

The course is tough! It has blind tee shots, elevated tees, hundreds of well placed tees, bunkers in tricky places and an excellent Pro! The course is always in superb condition but beware when there's any sniff of rain! Tempory greens are common on those wet days! The prices for green fees are perhaps a little high, but for a junior member, it couldn't be cheaper! £100 for the year and to sign in another junior (as a guest) is just £3! The clubhouse has great facilities with a widerange of snacks, rolls, toasties etc available and snooker tables all for practically peanuts! Proper members club, but well worth a 'one-off' visit!

I'd been waiting to place at Ross for a number of years as I had heard so much about it, both good and bad. And it lived up to everthing I expected. The course is like nothing I had played before and is absolutely superb. Its tree-lined holes are awesome with great tees, greens and fairways. I had been playing well for a while but this course is so mesmerising on your first visit that it can seriously affect your game. I paid £40 for the mid-week round which I gulped at initially but I have to say it is worth it. A negative is the clubhouse which is like something out of the 1950s. It does however appear to suit the demographic profile of the members whom I met on the day but then again I did play on a monday lunchtime. This is a traditional club which can be perceived a little snobby. OK there is an pretentious air about the place but its a pleasure to play and I would consider joining when I'm of the right age.

Very tight course, tree lined, in great condition, a thinking man's course, well worth a visit.

Great course. Not very long but very tight. Lots of undulation meaning plenty of blind shots. A really good test. Tees and greens were immaculate. Visiting for the day and made very welcome.
